Participant2/13/25 – RUMBA
Because of today’s word I’ve had Celia Cruz’s song “Quimbara” in my head all afternoon and evening (and coming outta my mouth too 😆)
The first line (after the chorus, which intros the song) translates as “The rumba is calling me. Tell it I’m coming!” And btw the chorus starts out with the same rhythm as @Indiana’s 3+3+2 recommended rumba rhythm phrase – except instead of ” Cubano Cubana Cuba” it’s “Quimbara cumbara cumba….” So I found what Indiana said interesting. .
It’s a great song. You guys should all listen to it. It’ll cost you maybe 3 minutes and maybe an ad you can skip after a few seconds. And it’ll make you wanna dance the RUMBA 😁🤷🏻
Ok enough babble. I couldn’t take a pic of Celia Cruz, sooooo…..
On our way to the happy hour, Pablo pointed out that this place looked like it might be a nice place to dance the RUMBA. I could certainly see Celia Cruz performing at a place like this!
Isn’t it gorgeous? I’d wear it, if it were clothes 🤩🥳🎊

2/13/25 RUMBACuba Libre Restaurant & Rum Bar
801 9th St NW suite a, Washington, DC 20001Some random Rumba facts. I’ve done Salsa myself, didn’t know rumba was even sexier!
“Rumba is a secular genre of Cuban music involving dance, percussion, and song. It originated in the northern regions of Cuba, mainly in urban Havana and Matanzas, during the late 19th century. It is based on African music and dance traditions, namely Abakuá and yuka, as well as the Spanish-based coros de clave.”
“The rumba is characterized by close partner work, a still upper body, and slow swaying hips and footwork that follows a slow-quick-quick pattern (American style) or a quick-quick-slow pattern (International style).Sep 17, 2021”
“As Salsa and rumba are in the same family of Latin dances they share many of the same step patterns. The main difference? Rumba is danced at about 1/4 the speed of your typical salsa making it a much easier way to learn the step patterns off by heart before applying them to the faster music. Apr 8, 2019”

“Ice, Ice, Baby” is a hip-hop song, but its famous hook has a ditty-like quality.

Stopped by to give a friend a part of my sourdough chocolate cherry bread and she sang me a ditty, “you are my sunshine.”

🎶 Here we go round the mulberry bush 🎵
Except of course mulberries grow on trees – I’ve always wondered why the song seems to think bushes…
This tree is being invaded by a weed vine. Mulberry trees are hibernating now and don’t have any visible green on them – the green here is the invading vine.
I know it’s a mulberry tree cuz I often stop to pick mulberries at it when they’re ripe – in late May /early -mid June
This is on the MVT, just north of that tight single file bit that goes through an underpass (visible to the right of the tree)

ParticipantThanks for pointing it out, Nadine. I never noticed that mulberry tree there. A big fan of mulberries here.

Participant2/14 ditty
The Ditty Bops were a fun duo that did one of their albums tours crossing the country on bicycle! Today’s word put their little ditty “Wishful Thinking” into my head. I tried to capture part of the lyrics in my photo:
“…why didn’t I learn to ride my bike / When it was warm and sunny outside?….When the leaves start falling from the trees / When the birds start flirting with the bees / When the wind starts blowing from the East to the West
Maybe you’ll be the one that I like best.”
