This highway cut a huge swath through SE/NE DC, dividing historic neighborhoods for a pollution factory!

Locks made it possible for boats to climb portions of the C&O Canal that would otherwise have been too steep for them. (Click for better view.)

I rode to Court House farmer’s market on my steel cx bike with panniers on the Custis trail – but I decided it would be too STEEP to ride back up it with full panniers (especially the corkscrew & the “2 sisters” under WL High school) so I rode home on Wilson -> Fairfax drive -> Bluemont junction trail instead.
Here’s a pic of my full panniered bike on the nice flat Bluemont junction trail, which is not STEEP at all (except for the drop at the end, but if anything full panniers are an advantage on downhills, so 😁 doesn’t count.)

My new friend Major is out of saddle climbing a steep – 11% – hill on Westgrove Blvd in Alexandria on his single speed freewheel Bianchi.

Looking up Walter Reed, the first section is a 10% grade, some think that is a bit steep.

A regular bikeshare is no match for San Francisco’s steep streets. Even an ebike would have problems with this one
