    16/01/2025 – Flint

I rode to Home Depot to take this picture of a single flint striker used in welding. A kind store manager generously allowed me to bring my bike inside, asking only that I watch out for carts.

I note that @kbikeva says she will no longer be posting the Wordle word at midnight.  That’s not an issue for me, because I am now playing Wordle.  But for anyone who isn’t, this page always posts the Wordle word at 12:01 am. If you like to ride just after midnight (or do so when a storm is predicted for the next day), you may want to bookmark it for future reference.

To be fair, in the original description of the game, I said I would post by 8 am. But I’ve been so sick this year it’s just adding to my misery to stay up so late or have to set an alarm for midnight.  😛

    1/16 Flint

Serendipity! This was not my intended “Flint” picture, but here’s why it fits. On my ride this morning my left ear was getting cold so I pulled over to reconfigure my askew hat/hood/buff situation. When I looked up at the intersection I saw these street signs: Franklin and New Jersey.

Instantly I was transported back to an elementary school field trip to Franklin Mine in Franklin, NJ. Like sparks from a flint can start a fire, this trip ignited my interest in geology. The mine museum has hundreds of types of rocks and minerals, including some rare ones unique to the area. There’s also a section about the Native American use of natural materials, like flint, for tools and hunting. Back in the day, we kids got to chip away rocks in the big open pit mine and then look at them under black lights to see them fluoresce.

    1/16/2025 FLINT

Did you know there is no actual white flint around here? White Flint Country Club, White Flint Mall, White Flint Park, White Flint Drive, White Flint Plaza, etc., were all named after the white quartz in this area.

Now I have no idea why someone didn’t consult a geologist before misnaming all these places. But if all those people can call quartz “flint,” then I can use these quartz boulders as flint, too.

    1/16/25 – FLINT

I bought a camping clicker – which I plan to use on my kitchen stove on that one burner…. Cuz that’ll be better than using a popsicle stick get a flame to light it from one of the other burners 😁

I got this at Ayers in Westover. It’s a great place. It’s a small family business but they have everything…. And the guy helped me find the flint cuz I wanted to be quick, having left the bike unlocked out back. Then he went outside! and watched! my! bike! while I paid for the clicker

(.,..and yeah i can’t believe I’m posting late. I’ve been going to bed so consistently early that waiting to post till I’m in bed has been fine up till now. But we’re expecting family this weekend so up late tidying….)

@Kbikeva hope you feel better soon! Don’t worry about the wordle. Sleep is much more important! And sounds like it’s easy enough to find if people don’t want to solve it themselves. Take good care!

There is plenty of prose inside your local library.
