    3/8/24 – EARLY

The  DC area is the only place I’ve lived long term that runs early. I struggle with getting places on time, cuz I grew up in Puerto Rico, which runs late. I lived in the Boston area in between, which runs a little late – nothing like PR, but they didn’t make a big deal out of a few minutes tardy at my kids’ schools or even my workplace. I got to be almost 40 years old with the idea that a little late was normal.

Then I moved to Arlington 😆🤦🏻‍♀️🤷🏻I’ve been living here for 20 years now and in this culture where 3 minutes late for a social bike ride is LATE, I still struggle to get to ride starts on time.

But! I’ve been lucky enough to find a few bike buddies who come from more relaxed time cultures. After all, we have personal computerized phones now, & if just 2 people are meeting up, it’s simple to adjust the time at the last minute.

Beth is from California, which has a similar relaxed time culture (Latino influenced I betcha) She & I have this great thing going where we plan to meet up at a certain time, and text-adjust as we’re getting ready – keeping in mind each other’s needs for the afternoon. We’ve adjusted the time by as much as an hour (maybe even an hour and a half, once.) We track each other to minimize the risk that one of us will hafta wait long for the other.

I find it impressive how smoothly our system works, given that she lives in Takoma park and I in Arlington.

So, to this EARLY culture I say nyah-nyah — as often as is practical without pissing people off 😁🤷🏻

3/8/24 EARLY in the share bike culture there were only the nice and neatly racked Capital Bikeshare bicycles and then scooters and lock and go bikes from Lime and Lyft and whoever else started littering paths and lawns and streets.

3/8/24 Reston EARLY in the morning. When the long shadows come from the east. The house lights are on and the papers are at the end of the driveways. What’s a retired person doing riding before 7? Uncivilized!

<p style=”text-align: center;”>3/8/24 – It’s not too EARLY to think about spring by preparing for your yard and garden with a local mulch sale at the high school</p>

    3/8/2024 early
I arrived at C&C Automotive at 7:15am to have my car serviced, 15 minutes too EARLY to hand my car key to them in person. Luckily they have a “night drop” so I was able to put the key in an envelope, drop it in, and head off to work on my bike.
