ParticipantGood seeing you today Dana and many thanks for your report and pics. I don’t know why I didn’t think to do a commute recon. Duh! Given that I will be working late and carrying my work laptop I’m gonna have to pass on bike commuting tomorrow. Sigh.

ParticipantI foolishly assumed that the roads in Fairfax would be better cleared after almost a week…but the plowing crews didn’t even plow 123 all the way to the fog line, even though there’s plenty of room to clear both the road AND the shoulder, so I had the pleasure of riding in the lane on a 45mph major commuter thoroughfare, boxed in by a wall of snow on my right. Great way to start the day!

ParticipantAt least you didn’t get hit by the overhanging ice chunk on Gallows!

ParticipantI can not believe that the PA Ave cycletrack is completely blocked RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE WILSON BUILDING. You know, that place where the DC Council works. And it’s not even blocked due to not bothering to plow. It was actively blocked by plowing space for cars, then left that way.

There was an overhanging chunk?
Gallows is slushy, and there are at least two spots where the snow bank nudges you into traffic. Unsettling, at best.

ParticipantARLINGTON CUSTIS REPORT – Feb. 18
Rode the Custis from its beginning at WOD to Rosslyn. Thin dusting of snow is hiding the slick spots underneath (also making them slightly less slick). However, it’s all rideable, although I’d be more nervous on a road bike. Saw about 8-10 tracks of other riders. None showed evidence of falling.
Be most careful at
– Glebe overpass and then the section before the top of the first sister
– Go slow on the switchback of doom
– Watch out for giant pile of snow pushed from Lyon Village parking lot onto trail
– Hills past Spout run overpass
– Shady parts of Rosslyn lugeGood luck.

I can absolutely believe this. Can’t you?

Ahh, I guess. I’m just so [expletive deleted][expletive deleted] angry. I want to go back there with a shovel and relocate all the snow into the councilmembers parkings spaces (Not that it would do any good, they’ll just park illegally somewhere as usual).

Please say that someone will approach Lyon Village about NOT DOING THIS. Part of me wants that to be with a ticket for a big fat fine, but my inner-Dirt wants it to be a pleasant overture…
From the bus window, I saw a cyclist dismount to walk his bike along the TR Bridge sidepath. His bike was bouncing along as he pushed, so I imagine it was necessary. Roads in the District are fine.

Yesterday afternoon I saw a big chunk of ice hanging over the bike lane southbound between Idylwood and the W&OD. Hopefully it’s gone, but if it did fall, it would most definitely force you in to the lane. be safe out there!

I had that thought as well and may see if I can figure out who and how. Maybe BikeArlington has contacts there because of Big Wheel Bikes?
Or maybe we could contact them to contact their management.
The pile does not cross the entire trail; there is still space to get by without dismounting.February 18, 2014 at 3:29 pm #993947Tim Kelley

I believe that the Capital Bikeshare program manager was in touch with them about getting a bikeshare station installed there, but was ultimately turned down because the landlord of the property didn’t want one.

Because it couldn’t climb over the 4′ wall of ice to get onto the W&OD at Gallows Road!!!!
New blog entry to go with that: http://lovemycommute.blogspot.com/2014/02/crosswalks-and-snow-on-w-trail.html
Thanks Arlington for being AWESOME about plowing. Keep it up!!!! Y’all are leading the pack.
Love,
Dirt
How do we get Fairfax county (or the NVRPA?) to plow trails here, too? The NVRPA’s “skiers” argument is a buncha hooey, because if that were the case, the entire W&OD should remain un-plowed, right? Or is Arlington County trampling all over the rights of the XC skiers?
(to be fair, I did see one skier on Thursday morning. First one in four years.)
