Fast Friendly Guy
ParticipantClockwise on the Arlington Loop. Few icy patches between EFC and Ballston–Ballston connector is a nightmare–and again on twin sisters. Longest sustained bumpy ice was bridge over Spot Run and climb up to Lee Hwy. Not too bad down into Rosslyn. I expected Trollheim to be bad, so no surprises there. Some sustained single track in a 10″ trough from 14th St Bridge until Gravely came into view. A few rough spots on bridges by the airport. 4MR was really no problem. W&OD from Shirlington to EFC no worries. W&OD west of Lee Hwy to Little Falls was ridiculous and I fell twice into a snowbank (no problems) while trying to remount after coming to a forced stop.

ParticipantThanks Dave, dabbling in doing a route from Vienna to Shirlington not using the W&OD to EFC and then the trail EFC onward. If not tomorrow, perhaps Wednesday. MELT SNOW!

I’d ride oak idlywood Barbour pinecastle dale Gordon’s broad west Lincoln Fairfax to get to clear roads near EFC.

ParticipantHey folks, I’m a newbie here but a 17 yr winter commuter in these parts.
Any reports on the Custis from Lyon V to Rosslyn? (Or is that part of the Arlington loop?) Hate that Spout Run bridge, bad bad design on the Bike & Ped side, zero drainage). Tomorrow AM should be “interesting”!!!

ParticipantHere’s the Greenbelt connection trail between Ivy Lane and Crescent Road. Seriously, how do disabled people get around? All the sidewalks and curb cuts are still unshoveled.
Actually my theory is that shoveling is illegal in Maryland. Or perhaps the operations manuals for the shovels haven’t arrived yet and the operators are waiting for training.

ParticipantBecause it couldn’t climb over the 4′ wall of ice to get onto the W&OD at Gallows Road!!!!
New blog entry to go with that: http://lovemycommute.blogspot.com/2014/02/crosswalks-and-snow-on-w-trail.html
Thanks Arlington for being AWESOME about plowing. Keep it up!!!! Y’all are leading the pack.

ParticipantRode the MVT this afternoon (non-studded 32s). By and large, the MVT was in pretty good shape. A handful of ice patches that had me walking but there was a clear line for virtually all the route.
The parking lot of the Columbia Island Marina was clear and the walkway to the wooden bridge over Boundary Channel had a few 40 ft long patches of ice. The bridge had a clear line.

ParticipantIf you are heading north on the MVT, don’t bother getting on until Slaters Lane. The stretch from the power plant past the apartment building with the wooden walkway has lots of ice. The wooden walkway before the marina has a single track clear. Lots of ice on the Columbia Island stretch.
On the Custis the worst stretch is between the Sprout Run overpass up to the Veitch St access trail (which isn’t cleared). Thick ice over the moguls by the bridge to nowhere.

As an aside to my above route, if you’re not comfortable on Idylwood for that stretch you can take Hurst, Virginia Ln, Virginia Av, Salem, Venice, Pinecastle to get you to the same general area without having to ride on the fast part if Shreve, its just a bit more convoluted than the other route. Good luck!
