You can check my Strava ride – there’s snow everywhere. I have a fairly low tolerance for faceplanting into slush, and an unfortunate habit of tensing up and fishtailing wildly when I encounter snow. And everywhere I went i had to turn around. I tried the 14th St Bridge, and it’s fine, but the MVT isn’t. Someone more adventurous than I could certainly do it, but on skinny road tires, following that 10″ wide path of pavement just didn’t seem like much fun. So I checked Hains Point, which is closed and covered. I almost got on Rock Creek Parkway by accident, then turned around to check the Roosevelt by the Kennedy Center and the snow actually laughed at me. So I can home. I’m done with snow.

Riding back from the bike shop this afternoon was fine, until I got to the Route 1 bridge over Four Mile Run. It wasn’t plowed or salted at all. Who’s responsibility is that? Alexandria, or Arlington? Also, the end of the Four Mile Run trail where it intersects Route 1 someone dumped a massive pile of snow on it. Why plow the trail if you’re just going to so this? I’m thinking it may have been the car dealership that did this.

There was no improvement to the Custis this morning. Well, the slush was more solid so a little easier to ride on.

W&OD west of EFC station is a bit of an adventure. (Admittedly this is just the stretch from the station to Lee Highway)

I used to feel the same way, until I got the Black Battleship. (TREK CrossRip with fenders and studded tires) Still when it’s this bad I generally stick to the roads (including, reluctantly, on the bridges)

Hains Point: Gates closed. Roads mostly snow/ice covered with ruts where a truck drove. Ruts are pavement, but inconsistent. Good for jogging or walking. Probably not so good for cycling. No cyclists observed.

MVT 14th to Rosslyn: Mostly snow/ice covered.

Has anybody checked out the College Park Trolley Trail, especially the bit between Greenbelt Road and Paint Branch Parkway?

Conditions on W&OD at mile 9.5 on Feb 16 at noon (between Gallows and Cedar Lane). There is a 12-inch wide path of hard pack. Didn’t see any evidence of bicycle tires, cross-country skiers, or Dog-sled Guy along this stretch of trail.

There will be a light snowfall on Mon. night/Tue. morning. But high temperatures will be in the 50s from Wed. through the weekend. Should be a lot of melting going on.

They assume all the cyclists are taking the road route there. :)

According to these fine folks, the CCT is plowed on the D.C. side by the NPS.

The Maryland side, according to this person via Twitter, is owned by the MoCo Parks Dept. The phone number is 301-495-2500. Please call and ask them to plow their side of the CCT.

MVT from 14th to Rosslyn: Passable. 50% snow and ice but there has been enough traffic and melting that there is a path you can follow and find pavement, perhaps at a moderated speed.

Hains Point: Gate closed but lots of melting. Still not good enough to do training round the loop, but if you just simply had to bike around HP you could probably make it now. You will be dodging joggers and walkers using the same narrow paths.
