Got an email today about bringing it back up after 11am but didn’t get anything yesterday.

Same thing happened to me – fortunately I saw the closure notice yesterday on Twitter.

Arlington County seems to have done a lot of trail plowing after this most recent snowstorm. I rode on clear trails at lunchtime today and had noticed coming home on Weds. evening that parts of the trails had been very lightly salted even before the storm. See also Dirt’s photos from today of some nicely plowed W&OD. Apparently the Custis was also plowed.

I made some inquiries this afternoon as to who I could thank and want to share the following list of people/offices. Notes of appreciation from a number of us might help a lot in encouraging more plowing in the future. (I addressed a single note to all of them at once.)

Update: I received an autoreply stating that Caroline Temmermand is out of the office until Feb. 28, and suggesting contacting Tom Mitchler (tmitchler@arlingtonva.us), the Parks and Facilities Construction and Maintenance Manager, in her absence, which I did. Tom sent me an immediate thanks and said that he is going to share my note with the guys who did the actual work. That makes me so happy! I added him to the list below.

Caroline Temmermand, Division Chief of Parks/Rec – ctemmermand@arlingtonva.us

Tom Mitchler, Parks/Rec Mgr of Facilities and Construction – tmitchler@arlingtonva.us

Kevin Stalica, Trails Manager – kstalica@arlingtonva.us

    Jane Rudolph, Director of Parks/Rec – jrudolph@arlingtonva.us

Please see the update to my post (#79,above). I sent a single note to all of them, but received an autoreply from Caroline Temmermand, who is out of the office until Feb. 28. Suggest sending to Tom Mitchler instead. I added his address to the post. I love that he passed the appreciation along to the people who did the hard work.

So, the W&OD was cleared, awesome! But how much of it? I can only tell around East Fall Church Metro from the photos.

I rode from Bluemont to EFC Metro. That’s all I can report on. I know that nothing has been touched beyond the Arlington County line. Falls Church and Fairfax county don’t normally do anything to clear the trail. I think Arlington can’t clear stuff under some of the underpasses, and they can’t plow over the bridges.

Thanks Pete, and your updates too. Looks like you had fun out there today.

The W&OD is clear from at least George Mason to at least Ohio Street. (There a short slushy segments.) The bridges are fine. I would imagine that means at least from Shirlington to EFC. I have no idea about 4MRT east of Shirlington. (It looks like a lot of 4MRT was cleared west of Columbia Pike–It’s not a trail I would assign much priority to.)

Four Mile Run is near flood stage under Wilson, but is not a problem.

The Western sidewalk on Key Bridge is slushy with a path, but might be problematic if it freezes.
The Custis hill up from Rosslyn behind the sound wall is a sheet of icy/slushy goodness. If it freezes, I wouldn’t want to go up it without studs or down it on any two wheels, but YMMV.

I saw CR going the other way (eastbound) on the WOD and I’m sure he’ll have a full report on the loop and perhaps out to Purcellville.

A couple of shots from Eads and FMR and then further east at the Route 1-FMR split.

On a ride this afternoon I came upon a snow graveyard where the snow that has been removed from the curb lanes is converted back to water

Thanks. Looks like I’ll need to wait it out until next week. Sorry, slacker team!

The weather was so nice and the street and sidewalk from the office window looked so clean and dry that I couldn’t resist. I got a CaBi and went down the mall and across the bridge anyway, in hopes that maybe the MVT would be ride-able at least. I checked it out from the bridge and it looked pretty bad, plus the few patches of snowy slush I went over with the CaBi demonstrated my limitations. So, I went to the 110 trail with visions of a long and slushy walk pushing the bike through the snow when wonder of wonders, the trail had been plowed! It was a beautiful evening to ride and I’m so glad I got to do it. I will be sending thank you notes to the great list that Arlingtonrider compiled.

I rode several Arlington trails on the way home last night. The W&OD was clear from Shirlington Rd (mile post 0) to Benjamin Banneker Park (actually to van Buren St) just past mile post 5. At mile post zero, the trail is plowed to the curb cut on the lateral 4 Mile Run Dr rather than to the intersection with the stoplight. When I headed east at 5:30 the Wilson Blvd underpass was just starting to flood. There were one or two icy spots, mostly as I came out from under bridges heading west. The trail over to the East Falls Church Metro was cleared at the basketball court in East Falls Church Park. Heading west from East Falls Church the W&OD was still snow covered. The main problems with the Arlington stretch of the W&OD are intersections and access trails. At the east side of the Columbia Pike crosswalk, the curb cut is blocked. It did not appear that any of the access trails were cleared. Someone had shoveled a narrow path at the Ohio St access, but did not cut through the berm at N 4 Mile Run Dr.

While the Custis Trail had been plowed (on Thursday?), it did not appear to have been retreated after the Thursday night snow/ice event. There were lots of slushy stretches and some areas behind sound walls and out of the sun were still ice. I could not ride up the second half of the second of the two sisters because of the thick slush.

The Bluemont Trail was clear and its only problem was at the southwest corner of Wilson and George Mason where there was an icy stretch and then the curb cut wasn’t clear. It didn’t help that a motor scooter rider had total blocked the clear area to have a conversation on his cell phone.

The 4MRT was mostly plowed from the Rte 1 access to Bluemont Park. The section under the bridges leading to the MVT was not cleared (there’s a picture a couple of posts up). Then right before Mt Vernon there is a snow berm where the plow cleared the access trail across the 4MRT. The next issue is at Shirlington Rd where the curb cut for the cross walk wasn’t fully cleared and there was a snow berm in the middle of the road. I could go a few yards up and make a u-turn. There was a narrow cleared path on the bridge over 4 Mile Run, but I stayed on the road. When I turned on to Arlington Mill Dr I discovered that none of the curb cuts were cleared so I continued on the road up to Walter Reed. Again the curb cut to get on the 4MRT heading west there wasn’t cleared, but I dismounted so I could continue my test run. The section through Barcroft Park was mostly clear with a few slush patches. At the west end the sidepath bridge along George Mason had not been cleared so I went right and then through the apartment parking lot. There were large snow mounds blocking the trail along the run from where the parking lot had been cleared. At the west end the trail was again cleared up the hill by the tennis court and then down under Columbia Pike. The slab ford there was starting to flood, and the next two crossings had at least six inches of fast moving water (plus the last 15 feet down to the crossing weren’t cleared. I walked the bike up the slope to the new community center and took Arlington Mill around the crossings. The next crossing up is more raised and was clear. When I got to the Glencarlyn, none of the access trails to the W&OD had been cleared and the playground crossing was at least a foot under water. I again pushed the bike up the packed snow to the clear W&OD. Once past the Arlington Blvd underpass, the second W&OD/4MRT intersection was cleared and I rode the 4MRT through Bluemont Park to the the Bluemont Trail. The parking lot by the Bluemont playground is also being used as a snow dump and was most covered by ten foot high mounds of snow.
