ParticipantThe Holmes Run trail is covered with snow and ice. Somebody managed to drive on it, but sadly they didn’t have a snowplow blade attached to the front of their vehicle.

ParticipantDitto on the courteousness of the drivers (the few I saw between 9:45 and 10:15). No trail riding for me since Wednesday, maybe on the Custis on the way home this evening.

ParticipantThe afternoon commute looks to be less Shackleton-like with some nice sun and warmth. Potomac Ave behind Potomac Yards was pretty iced up this morning with marginal plowing, but once you hit CC the streets are plowed clear (even into the bike lane- thank you Arlington).
Coulda used some pemmican for the man-hauling adventure from pentagon thru the marina to 14thSt.
14th St bridge had a real skinny clear path this morning about 9a that I’m hoping my wider body and bike will be able to cleanly traverse later today.

CaBi says they will try to reopen later this morning. But no definite time given.
It would’ve been nice if CaBi had had the decency to send out an email last night or early this morning letting us know that the docking stations were all on lockdown. I got off the train at L’Enfant to do my daily CaBi ride this AM and found that I couldn’t unlock any bikes at 7th & C SW. Thinking it was maybe a fluke at that station, I trudged over to the one at Maryland and Independence SW by the DoEd building and same thing. So I call them and get the “oh yeah, we shut the system down and will reopen whenever.” Did not put me in a warm and fuzzy mood this morning since I was a mile from the office. Had I known, I would’ve stayed on the train and taken it up to the Red Line and transferred there to get close to my office. I wasn’t planning on an additional mile walk today because of the lack of bikes. #CaBiFail!

ParticipantI guess you missed the Forum posting yesterday. Well, since it was above freezing, you can’t substitute the walk for a sleeze ride. You’ll just need to loop around another block on the way to the Metro this evening. Enjoy.

The 110 trail was unrideable this morning by anything short of a fatbike.
Thanks. Looks like I’ll need to wait it out until next week. Sorry, slacker team!

They tend to post updates on their Facebook and Twitter pages. I know that’s not a substitute for an email announcement, but even if people ask them to send announcements next time, there’s no guarantee they will. But they do keep the Facebook/Twitter pages updated.
They did send an email on Wed. morning though. (I don’t remember if the system stayed closed all day on Thur. and into this morning. If so, then they did send the announcement, although it was 12 min. after the system actually closed.)

:confused::confused::confused:
I thought that the weather yesterday was going to continue to suck and I could take an early morning sleaze ride to beat everyone else at this game. Did someone really suggest that walking is a substitute for this craziness if it is below freezing?

Nope, just yanking a chain.

It appears I did. I don’t check this everyday and with all of the threads, it’s not the easiest thing to peruse. But still and all, CaBi owes it to its users to provide an email if it’s going to shut the system down.

FYI–Bikeshare sent out an email yesterday morning, notifying customers that the system would be closing:

Maybe check your spam filter, or make sure that your email address is up to date in account information?

The entire Custis trail has been plowed, but it only about 20% wet pavement. The rest is an icy, slushy mess. I rode the whole thing from Rosslyn to the W&OD without needing to put a foot down, but it was a bit of an adventure ride. It is definitely doable as long as you have studded tires that have some tread to deal with snow. This afternoon regular mountain bike tires or very aggressive cross tires would likely work, but keep in mind there is a lot of soft ice out there. Two sisters climbs are VERY difficult. They are slushy and snowy, but fun! The bridge east of Lyon Village… the one that goes along I-66 over the top of Spout Run Parkway is by far the worst. It was plowed nicely, but the snow at the sides has held the water in. It is 4″ deep in slush and extremely difficult to ride through.
Wow, no kidding. A lot more had melted by the time I came through I’m sure, but I couldn’t get over the west of the Two Sisters. I probably didn’t carry enough speed up but I really was too tired by then anyway. That was a tough commute.

Got an email today about bringing it back up after 11am but didn’t get anything yesterday.

Yup–that would be the same distribution method!

The second sister was tough. Having great snow tires made it easier.
