Loved the tailwind. Despite being on my CX bike with 32s and big ol’ backpack I got a couple of PRs on the front side of Hains. The whole time I was thinking, so *this* is what EPO feels like.

Hated the headwind. Especially being on my CX bike with 32’s and big ol’backpack, I actually had PR’s removed from my Strava history. The whole time I was thinking I need EPO!

I had to ride into the headwind, past my exit off the W&OD, then turn around and come back, just to get some of that tailwind. Had to!

I rode the W&OD from just before Brandymore Castle out to Purcellville (and then roads down through Middleburg to The Plains), then reversed route back to Arlington for a total of 127 miles. The only place with “issues” was the W&OD on the westbound descent from Clarke’s Gap where there are 3 or 4 sections of ice, each about 20 feet long. Actually, now that I think about it, the section just east of Clarke’s Gap going under the bridge and up the hill was pretty icy, too. But easily avoided by just taking the road, there.

Of course, with the forecast tomorrow for frozen mix, etc., all bets are off.

Definitely some icy spots out there on the roads, but mostly on the shoulders and sneckdown areas, and any spots with standing water. What ice was there wasn’t really sheet/glare ice, but certainly enough to take you down if you aren’t careful. Not sure how the trails are.

W&OD to custis had just enough spots of lightly dusted snow to be fun, but not enough to be dangerous. It’ll make a little noise, but it won’t take you down.

I love the fact that Shawn leaves for work about 1 to 1.5 hours before me, takes the same route, and then reports on trail conditions. I get up to the minute information before walking out the door. Most excellent service Shawn!

Same with the Custis to/including TR Bridge.

Funny, I was thinking of that today as I stared out the front door, trying to figure out if there was ice on the trail. “No trail condition updates for me, but I bet Cindi will like reading whatever I can remember to post about when I get to work!”

    glad to be of help!

The wooden bridges on the W&OD from Bon Air through Glencarlyn had a dusting of snow as did the TR Trollheim wooden walkway. Just take it easy on them. The concrete section of the 4MRT from Shirlington Rd to the I-395 underpass had ice patches, but they were easy to navigate/avoid. Otherwise just a few frozen puddles or run off.

That looks more like 50 feet to me. So quit whining.

I couldn’t quite find the best place to post this but want to throw out something I wrote on my blog recently. I expressed my frustrations with the folks at the WOD on not clearing the trails and got a few more exact answers, although I am still frustrated just the same. I wonder if I am being whiny about this or perhaps most other folks (not in Arlington – Vienna/Reston areas) would enjoy the park pitching in more so folks can get to work w/o taking the Metro and being sidelined for upwards of a week. Love to hear what you think.

Do you think I should pursue this more? I planned on writing them back if so. I’m guessing other folks have done this route too.

Well, Washington, Wilson, and Clarendon were clear so I’ll be able to ride in tomorrow. Too bad Java Shack was closed, hope they’re open for FCCII.
