The W&OD is plowed until Shreve, apparently, because I could get on it, and then right after Shreve comes a hundred feet or so of terribleness. Then it’s ok until citizens bridge, after which I got off.

I took American Cyclo’s route on the way home after finding out what others battled through Falls Church. I got off the trail at Shreve Rd and didn’t even attempt the WOD beyond that point. I’m pretty disappointed in tonight’s ride, I don’t know if they actually did a snow blower and melted snow came back on the trail or they didn’t even snow blow. Debating on riding tomorrow afternoon or not (only riding in the afternoon). I’m guessing the WOD might be all melted by then?

Rode the MVT from Roosevelt to Rosslyn and then the Custis westbound from DC until the top of the spiral o’ death on CX 32mm tires his afternoon.

    • Bridge was completely fine.
    • The short stretch of the MVT I was on had snow/ice on the sides, but there was always a clear path through although it gets narrow in parts, and there is a big puddle at the top of the GW overpass bridge. Also slowed down a lot at one point as a runner was approaching coming the opposite way.
    • The Custis was mostly fine and although I didn’t have to stop there were a few slushy sections still with icy patches underneath I rode slowly over. Studs would be preferred for those sections. I wouldn’t want to ride it on 23s/25s, especially downhill but YMMV – it will have melted more by tomorrow AM.

Shawn, do you ride all the way into Vienna? Trying to figure out the trail condition from Shreve Rd into Vienna.

W&OD from custis to shreve is passable with a field of ice by great falls and icing over again just before shreve at poplar heights pool club

Yes, it was a surprisingly windy evening commute! I was feeling good being on the trail for the first time since the snow, but was glad it was still daylight when I did the section of the Custis between Lee Hwy and the Spout Run overpass which still had a lot of ice. Think I’ll be riding on roads again tomorrow morning since I don’t suppose it will melt much tonight. Although those stoplights on the road sure are pesky. Now that I’m recording everything for freezing saddles, I discovered that my on-road commute is one mile shorter than the on-trail commute, but takes the same amount of time.

They were mixed yesterday at 4-5pm when I was riding home (Reston -> Arlington) (I often pass you out between Gallows and Vienna in the AM). In general there is a path of pavement (sometimes only half a foot wide), but a few places where that is interrupted by slush or switches sides, etc. Probably the worst is right around (east of) Vienna and Shreve (and Virginia Ln hill, though easily avoided obviously). I decided to swap out the studded-tires wheelset for my 28s for this morning’s ride, though I may remount them if it is below freezing, will evaluate on our local unplowed connector trail. I figure I will have to slow down a few places between EFC and Vienna, but on the whole it will be faster than the studded tires.

In general I was happy to still have the snow tires on yesterday afternoon, though more for plowing through slush that I am hoping will be mostly melted now. Certainly I would expect road-tire-friendly conditions by this afternoon.

Nah, I’m lucky enough to bail just after the cement plant but before poplar swim club. W&OD looked better than I expected though when I drove to target last night

    Going west from Falls Church:

The section from the Shreve intersection to Virginia Ln is clear.

The Virginia lane climb has some icy/slushy patches. Not bad, but they surprised me because I was in too high a gear and spun out immediately. You’ll likely be happier just using the road.

From Virginia lane downhill until Gallows is nearly all clear. There are some totally avoidable patches of slush, but they’re in full view of the sun and will hopefully vanish today.

I took Gallows up to Tysons, but looking across from the intersection, it looked like Gallows to Cedar was pretty clear too.

Yay NVRPA and rain and sun!

The WOD from the Caboose in Vienna to HunterMill: The first 400 yards were frozen bumpy and terrifying. yesterdays melt, turned into this morning’s black ice.

I bailed at Hunter Mill and took Hunter Station Rd from there.

The thick ice sections should all soften up and turn to slush by this afternoon, I would think. I’m planning on taking the trail all the way back from RTC to Gallows Rd at this point.

Rode the Custis today for the first time in a week. There are some icy spots. The large pile of snow behind Lyon Village really gets under my skin. This shopping center certainly benefits from the trail being RIGHT THERE, but then they treat the trail like this. The pile at Scott are also annoying.

I did discover this site to report snow “problems”: http://egov.arlingtonva.us/snowrequest/Home/ESRI Don’t know whether it will work, but they have been reported. I also called the DPW snow number (7032286555) and spoke with Carl, who is one of the more rude and unhelpful Arlington County employees with whom I have ever spoken. They are not taking any more requests for snow removal. If there’s still snow on the ground, we’re stuck with it, I guess.

Yeah, I had aspirations to run regular tires but when it was 31F at 6am and 30F in Reston I decided that studded tires made sense. I’m glad I did. As it was there were a few dabs. That was slippery! The worst part was honestly Falls Church. But yeah a little bit messy around Vienna still.

Obviously will be just slushy this afternoon, so that’s great. I always take Hunter Station now unless I’m headed further west, so I don’t know anything about the trail through Reston.

Now *tomorrow* I will plan to ride road tires. Finally.

That and all the trash that blows onto the trail right of way from the dumpster located by the access point at CVS. That shopping center really needs to work on being a good neighbor.

    Please contact trails@arlingtonva.us ;

I have contacted Arlco before about this particular junction on the trail. The trashcan stuff was overflowing and blocking the curb cut.

It is quite clear that this shopping center thinks little about the bike trail. There are “no bike trail” parking signs in the parking lot and the only bike parking is poorly placed and anemic.

There was some talk about putting a CABI station there at the turn in the trail as it turns west to go to the cork skrew. These problems to me support why I think this would be a poor choice of a location.
