Rode from Vienna to Falls Church on the W&OD today, and it was entirely passable on slicks. There were several slushy patches, but either there was a good line through, or it was wet enough that there was good pavement contact throughout.

Just in time for snow tomorrow.

Anyone ride Reston <-> Vienna late Saturday or anytime Sunday and care to comment on the trail out there?

Want to get a better sense of the melt for a possible commute DC -> Reston and back tomorrow w/ big dummy, about 35 lbs of clothes/cargo, 205 lbs of me. Nokian w240s.

Not allowed to fall at all. :)

    Thanks.

I wouldn’t be as worried about last week’s snow. I’d be more concerned about the new snow that’s supposed to arrive on Monday. It might not be too much in DC and Arlington, but I’ve heard higher snow totals for areas out to the west and north.

I rode Reston to Hunters Mill Road on Saturday. I was on the road bike. There were some slushy patches in the usual places; I’m guessing Sundays warmth probably cleared most of them off. The stretch approaching Hunters Mill road was problematic; still some snow and rutted ice there. If it isn’t rideable, it isn’t too long to just walk it though. Didn’t go past Hunters Mill road, but based on the rest of the trail I’m guessing Hunters Mill to clarks crossing would have been clear, and there would have been a few patches of slush between clarks crossing and Vienna.

Just FYI, 4MR under Wilson was pretty damp this morning. Would recommend crossing on the surface.

Yeah, it’s wet out there this morning with lots of standing water and water using the trail to get somewhere. The water level of 4 Mile Run was very high and I expect all the slab fords are flouded and as myoglobinologist points out the Wilson Blvd underpass is probably under at least six inches of water. I headed up the Custis instead of the long way around on the W&OD/4MRT/MVT, but you may encounter high water in the Carlin Springs Rd underpass on the MVT as well.

I thought folks might like a picture, so here’s one taken about 0815 today.

Ok, so a lot more than six inches of water. I’d hate to think what all you might hit in that flood.

FYI: DC->Custis Trail->W&OD westward->Milepost 16 (east reston-ish) was entirely clear of snow, ice, and slush. That’s where I got off (my office is right at mile 16).

There were a few puddles and I was soaked to the bone. In other words, nothing to complain about. :)

W&OD from EFC to MVT clear of snow and ice, but underpass at Wilson is flooded and underpass at Carlyn Springs is close to flooding–all fords on 4MR are flooded. MVT to Mem Br clear of snow and ice, but you’ll find some pretty big puddles between airport and 14 St Br. Only saw 2-3 riders the whole distance!

Everything clear on the Custis Cherrydale to TR Bridge, and through the District. I only saw one other cyclist. He was in shorts. He made me feel better about wanting heavier tights on my legs.

I went through it at about 700 this morning. The water level was a little lower than your photo, but still up to the bottom of the hubs on the bike. I came out dragging a branch about 4 feet long. It was stupid to go through but I met someone coming the other way so I didn’t think about it until it was too late. I guess I should have paid attention to the squishing noises coming out of his shoes and his scuba gear.

Some dodgy spots on the W&OD between Falls Church and Gallows, but no glare ice, and it felt like most of it’s turning into slush anyway. The Gallows intersection was still a bit icy when I reached.

All of this is good news, because you can look at all the stuff covered in ice without wiping out. It’s quite pretty.

WOD from EFC to the Custis was slushy, but the only slippery part was Brandymore. I opted to walk it, though someone rolled past me on cross tires without any problem. Some dodgy parts on the Custis, but ride-able with caution. Only saw two or three bikes this morning.

There are two separate threads for Feb 2014 trail conditions. Should consolidate.
