ParticipantDid anyone go to this in Arlington yesterday? I shot an email to the Warrenton and Fredericksburg bike clubs this morning.

ParticipantThe meetings below are still left – please come out and show your support for a fully networked bike infrastructure and full integration into multi-modal solutions (e.g., bike to bus/rail, bikes on bus/rail) where biking is often the first and last leg of a trip. Bike access to bus and rail stations should extend out to at least 8 miles from each stop/station. Some comments seemed to imply that riders might only bike in from 2 miles away or perhaps the most enthusiastic might bike as many as 5 miles. They need to hear real experiences from the horse’s mouth!

Participant9. Love to whir along streams and forests (when on the trails), which are in full bloom in the Spring.

ParticipantI went to the Leesburg meeting last night and can report that the SuperNoVa team is receptive to discussions of bike infrastructure. The more we have different voices bringing this up, the greater weight they will assign to this topic. So as many bike friendly people as possible need to attend this (even if they fill out the survey). And fill out the survey (even if you attend the meeting) making sure to add comments about fully networked bike infrastructure).
They are also very receptive to multi-modal discussions involving bikes, such as more bike racks on buses, improved bike parking, better bike access to/from stations and stops (need to emphasize a wide area, otherwise they tend to think in a 1 mile radius).

ParticipantWe’re already up to 11 people in very short order…

ParticipantAnother question might be:
– Should we be considering widening the scope to a Washington Area Recumbent Club?

For the most part that transition is positive, as you have much more in the way of options with drops on hand and body positioning than you do in pretty much a fixed position on a hybrid
True, but the hybrid position is relatively comfortable in all the areas I stated, and hands on the drops can introduce neck, back, shoulder, wrist, etc discomfort and/or pain.

They have to finish up the park and the esplanade, hopefully by early fall. Then WABA and other organizations and individuals can help to push for those trail extensions.
I say go ahead and push for it now, there’s no reason to wait. Getting on the plans as soon as possible is important to getting it sooner rather than much later.

ParticipantIf you are shifting from “up on the bars” with your hybrid to a “down on the drops” position, you may want to consider how that might feel on your back, neck, shoulders, wrists, etc for the duration of your commute.

Thanks! FWIW, this is what I posted in the open box at the end of the survey. The more I think about it, the more I’m disappointed that they don’t explicitly mention cycling…
Please consider redesigning this survey to allow users to input information about multiple modes of commuting. For example, I bike for most of my trips, but occasionally I ride the bus or drive. I know a lot of people who combine biking and metro or driving and biking.
Also, it is disappointing that the Vision Plan does not explicitly plan to identify enhancement for bicycling infrastructure. Cycling is clearly a realistic strategy for enhancing people’s mobility through non-single occupant auto means, especially when combined with other modes of transportation. Many times, cycling infrastructure can be improved with little capital investment. Cycling can also extend the range of accessibility to other transit services – e.g. bike routes and safe bike parking at a train or bus rapid transit station can allow a lot more people to reach the station without adding traffic to the roads, demanding resources for car parking, etc.
Excellent, dasgeh! I’m rewording this to give a unique twist, and I encourage everyone to add similar comments.

ParticipantYou might want to consider a performance recumbent as well. Bikes@Vienna have a wide variety and you would be surprised at how comfortably fast you will be able to go having great visibility at the same time.

The grocery store, not so cool. I had to chain my bike to some sort of pipe. When I asked about a bike rack I received a blank look followed by the observation, “Yeah, three other people ride their bikes here.”
Ann, I grew up in Vienna and have seen massive changes over the decades. If the grocery store chain does not provide bike racks, complain to the district/regional HQ. If that does not work (where they respond back with a “Yes, we will have one put in right away”, then consider taking your business elsewhere. If it is Magruders, then send an email to the ownership. Keep us posted on this, bike infrastructure is sorely needed and squeaky wheels play a big part.
Kudos on your lifestyle change – if more did so, oil imports wouldnt’ be such an economic and national security problem.
