ParticipantYou are right, it does provide a reference that is superior to Google Earth.

ParticipantPerhaps a bike horn might get the attention you need from the necessary distance.

I recommend that you should start your commute slowly by drive or Metro half way and bike half way, keeps it under 10 miles each way and built it up to 16.5 miles.
Agreed, along with everything else you said.

I did a 16.5 mile ride last Saturday when it was windy with a group. I didn’t die, but I think I might have to take the bike on metro and ride it back till I can get myself in better shape. I have a lot of respect for you bike commuters.
Patience, Persistence, and deliberate Practice was good advice I received in this post at BentRiderOnline.com (a forum for recumbent riders).

ParticipantThanks for covering this critical area, one which will only continue to get worse as oil prices continue their erratic climb.

ParticipantMy favorite response to someone yelling “Go ride on the bike path!!!” is “Go drive on the Beltway!”…
Others;
-“I’m truly sorry, I take it you own this road?”
– “Ignorance of the law is no excuse”
– “Bush said you are addicted to oil – what don’t you understand?”
– “Gee, that’s a nice Middle East oil burner!”
The counter intuitive approach is;
– genuine smile/wave – “Have a nice day!” – wihich really deflates their hot air balloon

ParticipantIf you use the Custis Trail and go over the Memorial Bridge, then cruise down the mall, the length I get from BikeToaster is about 14.5 miles. The Custis Trail can be fairly hilly between Ballston and the river, though. I built the route using a starting point of Cedar Lane at the W&OD trail and adding incremental course points along the way.

ParticipantSuggested DC bike routes can be found at http://bikewashington.org/commute/downtown/index.htm. You’ll see a nice safe route along the reflecting pool and mall, as noted by another member.
The official DC bike map is here.
While nothing replaces firsthand scouting of a route for final assessment, a excellent next step is the mapping tool BikeToaster, which will plot routes automatically, and allows you to insert intermediate course points so that you can ‘steer’ the automation process between the two end-to-end track points. Make sure to go to the Auto Routing box and select “OSM” and click on “Bike” so that it takes advantage of bike routes.
Besides a map-based view of your trip, it gives an graphic showing altitude changes, and a readout of;
– Distance
– Estimated Time
– Ascent
– Descent
– Start Elevation
– Finish Elevation
– Minimum Elevation
– Maximum ElevationYou can download to
– File: mbcrs gpx tcx
– Garmin GPS: gpx tcxAnd view in Google Earth (kml)
Another helpful site is http://ridewithgps.com/. It’s similar, and make sure to select “Cycling” in the right hand menu area.

ParticipantI used to time myself and see how much progress I could make improving myself each time out. Sometimes I would make less than wise decisions at stopsigns and crossings, however, so had to steel myself to practice restraint in those areas.

ParticipantI’m a bit surprised that many others haven’t commented. Do few people here actually connect to Metro? Might not our suggestions be helpful in the light of the large untapped bike-to-Metro potential out there?
