Sorry, a 1994 Trek does not qualify as old.
I guess what’s “old” depends on your own personal timeline. :+)

ParticipantJust to be clear…not all of us who ride fat old Treks (1994 Mountain 820) qualify as fat or old or guys.

ParticipantUm…that’s a hard call, but I think I should pass. w&w.

ParticipantYup. dbb keeps the minutes, and we approve them at the next-month’s meeting. I think as a first step it would be worth our while to find out exactly what these [county? state? federal?] regulations say about siting traffic signals.

Wait, what? It should be illegal to put up a sign that isn’t legally enforceable. They took years of cyclists complaining about one of the most dangerous intersections in the area and decided the best solution was a sign with zero legal weight?
I was stunned, too. I asked them, why not and what would it take to make it enforceable?
Apparently there are various size and location rules for enforceable signals. The ACPD officers were not sure why Arlington installed this itty-bitty non-enforceable signal. And unfortunately we did not have the right Arlington County representatives in the room to answer those questions.
The police officers said, however, that at certain intersections non-enforceable signs are the only thing that’s allowed due to various regulations… so sometimes they are better than nothing… assuming the drivers can actually see them.
It would be worth digging deeper and finding out precisely what it would take to get a prominent, enforceable no-right-turn-on-red signal at Lynn/Lee.

I drove the IOD from the I-66 ramp recently. That no turn on red sign does not stand out very well. It is attached to the signal arm, in line with three signals what will be red when it is effective, has some red in its lights itself and the arm is up pretty high. I was looking for it and thought it blended in too much. Perhaps it should flash.
Agree that the no-turn signal is puny and hard to see. We raised concerns when speaking with the ACPD at the March BAC meeting. They were sympathetic. They told us that the sign is not even legally enforceable. So it’s mainly just for show, but since it doesn’t show up…. sigh.

ParticipantWow. Really interesting to hear the absurd, sometimes painful, often funny-only-in-retrospect stories of what we’ve been through. Please be assured my “likes” were a sign of appreciation and not sadism. :+)
I’ve just had the unexpected good news that my schedule has shifted and I’ll be able to attend the final happy hour – I am thrilled! – so I was exploring the possibility of giving a pointless prize for the most falls. But from this exercise I have determined the utter stupidity of such a designation, since I’d be awarding it to myself. :+)
But thank you for sharing. Healing wishes to those still nursing their bumps and bruises! w&w

ParticipantIndeed, our powerful bear cub is done with winter hibernation…. thus the very pretty light blue line. The bears are on-a-roll.

ParticipantI’m wondering what’s the best way to get from the WOD to the Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods at Tyson’s Station on Rt 7 in Falls Church?
Last night I got off the WOD at West Street and I followed Broad/Rt 7 ‘til I got to Tyson’s Station. That was NOT my favorite ride. On my return I took Idylwood and then L on Barbour and Pinecastle to get back to the WOD. Is that the best connection?
I’m happy to do more miles if there’s a prettier way that doesn’t involve sucking up exhaust fumes and that won’t land me under a car tire. :+)
Thanks for any suggestions.

Participantooh… good place to know about!!!
Note that it doesn’t open ’til 7:30 a.m…. perhaps later than ideal for those with early meetings in DC.

ParticipantThe Wilson underpass on the WOD is flooded with several inches of stream-water from the rain, as of 7:30 p.m. (Tuesday)… so far it’s still easy to ride through, but I’m thinking that by morning we might opt to cross the road instead, unless anyone’s in the mood for a dip.

Alright, so why dont we just get Bikenetic to open up and serve pancakes!
Actually, Lazy Sundae serves breakfast. They open at 6 am, and sit right at the WOD and Bikenetic. Monday Pancake Club.

OY. You are taunting us with these mouth-watering pictures when we’re stuck at our desks! Those pancakes made me so hungry I broke out my very last packet of instant oatmeal from my drawer. Needless to say, it did not ‘do the trick.’ Not even close.

Spring does horrific things to the minds. Anyone else wanna confess to hallucinations? Perhaps, ya knnnnow, those of us who sniff wood-glue all day long?? ‘Cause we all know the only place The Imaginary Kid spent the day is at Imaginary Zwift Point. Any such sitings of him can only be attributed to depraved endorphin addictions.
You lie, rcannon100. The Kid has escaped from The Island! You’re just jealous ‘cause he’s a Bear and you’re not… and ‘cause he just gave us an extra 110.3 deliciously awesome points (thanks Jeremy!!!!).

The slushfest between Cedar and Gallows turned out to be my undoing with the skinny slicks. My bike took a knee to the pedal and a crotch to the top tube, but is otherwise fine.
OUCH. That sounds miserable. Sorry to hear, Nimish. Sending healing wishes your way…. though I suspect a bottle of ibuprofen might be more useful!

ParticipantI just want to say thank you for all the hand-holding following my triple-tumble ride to work yesterday…. the moral support, the help with my routes, the technical advice, and the amazingly kind offer to swap my slicks with someone’s studs.
I’m writing yesterday off as a comedy of errors. The roads were indeed icy (and as Starduster’s article notes, Arlington was running out of salt), but also I was using my kid’s bike, thinking her slicks would be more stable on the ice than my own – an incorrect assumption. Also her brakes work frighteningly well (unlike mine) but I can barely reach the right brake lever when I’m wearing my multiple hand-mitts, so I was relying almost completely on front-braking. Then last night I saw SteveO’s primer on ice-riding technique…”I think the #1 tip is to avoid using your front brake.” UGH.
In any case, today’s early-morning commute was great, even on the icy sections. Good thing none of you passed me riding down Henderson, or you would have heard me belting out “Here Comes the Sun!”, grinning ear-to-ear.
Thanks everyone.
