Again and again and again, this thread screams out for an empathy button.
Ribs, knees, butts, heads… amongst us we could soon cover a whole edition of Grey’s Anatomy.
Heal fast, everyone… sending virtual ibuprofen and icepacks.
Let’s hope no more crashes for the rest of the season.
    Hugs from w&w

I’m planning to be there, most likely after 6 pm. Looking forward!!
Hopefully some other Totally Spoked team-15-mates can join us.
Worth noting that the Happy Hour $5 appetizer specials are available until 7 pm….

Maybe you just need a bigger trailer?

The double Burley’s are quite spacious and have nice “trunk” space as well. I pulled my girls in a double ’til they were 6 and 10 years old (admittedly we run on the small side…). That was our car. Loved it.

Got it on the calendar but it will be challenging for me to get there on time.

I raised that issue last night at the BAC meeting. Turns out this is a drop-in event. You absolutely don’t need to come at 5 pm. They are doing a second presentation at 7 pm, so that is when I’ll be aiming to arrive by. Great if we can get a strong turnout, even if it’s only for that last hour from 7 to 8 pm. (Or just for a few minutes, even, to write something on the wall.) And the Westover Beer Garden is next door…. :)

drevil is in northern California this week — that’s why he can’t make it to the HH tomorrow :(. So he’s IT. :)

I’ve cross-checked the Forum- and Strava- RSVP lists one last time. As of right now, we have 114 people signed up for tomorrow’s happy hour.

Anyone else want to come? It’s fine to just show up at the door, but it’s even better if you tell us now so we can get an accurate guess-timate of how much food to order.

Please remember to bring $10 to help cover the finger-food buffet (soft pretzels, cheese quesadillas, falafel sandwiches, hummus, pita, vegetables) and the rental fee/tavern staff.

    Thanks.
Looking forward to the festivities. w&w

Awkward admission. This first entry in the 2017 London Bridge log is my own. I turned too abruptly and skidded on the wet bricks atop Key Bridge. My London Bridge experience was not graceful, to put it mildly. On the bright side, the result was nothing more than a garden-variety skinned knee beneath my tights, fixable with a couple BandAids that I took from the office first aid kit when nobody was looking. But the psychic pain of telling y’all is enormous.
Actually I’ve known these skinny slicks were a poor match for me, so I ordered grippier tires just last week. Hopefully I will get them soon.
In any case, just for the record, I am ineligible to win my own prize… unless perhaps I come up with something truly awesome to award, in which case I am totally in the running. :)

Hmm. If you wore that, um, stylish swimsuit to the pool last summer, then go for it. Otherwise, best stick with your regular swim gear. :)

Admittedly, a 21st century swimsuit ride puts you “on the spot,” but if I could do it, so can you! I’m not saying it’s easy… Last night’s bikini-ride got the attention of neighbors and passing cars, and my girls were mortified – especially the 11-year-old. Sixth grade is all about fitting in and slipping under-the-radar. It’s weird enough having a biker-mom… and now this?!

I hope we do not need the London Bridge Prize in 2017 because we all stay upright. But just in case, here is the thread on which to record your crashes for purposes of Freezing Saddles.

Please note: This prize is grounded in empathy. I have gone down way too many times on the ice – it can be terrifying and painful. Any humor associated with this prize is laughing with you and not at you. If you crash, you are in good company. But I hope you don’t.

This is the prize for the most crashes…London Bridge is falling down

What constitutes a “fall” for the London Bridge prize?

To me it means you don’t catch yourself with your feet – you don’t stay upright … you actually go down in one way or another. I have no interest in getting lawyerly and technical. If you feel it was a fall, and you live to tell the tale, that is good enough.

I don’t care about your bike… I mean, I do care, but not for this prize. If your bike magically stays upright in a snowbank while you topple over the handle bars, then that counts too.

I hope you do not get hurt… I hope everyone who goes down lands in nice deep fresh snow. But if history repeats, that may not be the case.

    Be safe!! Happy riding. w&w

I never fail in reaching my goals since I don’t set any to begin with. But here are some memorable tidbits from 2016:
–Cracked my ribs on both sides in September riding into a pothole on a fast downhill. That same week, my younger daughter got slammed in the head by a sixth grade boy’s school locker, resulting in a concussion, and my other kid smashed her leg doing flips on beam. So we were quite the trio!
–Front wheel imploded and the tire exploded on the Crescent trail in November. I lost control and came to a terrifying halt but miraculously managed to stay upright. Thankful this did not happen in traffic.
–Made multiple trips to Phoenix Bikes and was blown away every time by the skill, kindness and good humor of Edoardo and his team. If you’re looking for a first-rate organization to link to your Amazon Smile account, consider designating Phoenix Bikes.
–Managed to take a few rides purely for fun including the hills of Lake Barcroft (palatial living around private lake right next to Seven Corners – who knew!), the Zoo Lights ride (plus a festive and tasty stop at Bob & Edith’s diner), and an ad hoc neighborhood tour of incredible holiday lights.
–I still haven’t used Strava consistently for a full year, as I don’t pay attention to my numbers. But I like the connection with friends :) and it’s fun to post my silly rhymes and other titles, so maybe I’ll keep it up in 2017.

I’ve been cross-checking the Forum and Strava RSVP lists for the Happy Hour — and the FS master registration log. Roughly 85 people have signed up for the welcome happy hour so far (that’s less than a third of this year’s Freezing Saddles participants). Five who signed up for the HH are not listed on the FS registration list. The more the merrier at the HH, so long as those who want to be on FS teams are actually registered for Freezing Saddles.

To those who have not signed up, or who are not familiar with Freezing Saddles happy hours, I would encourage you to join us if you can make the scheduling work for you. It’s fun to meet your teammates. Your FS experience will be so much better if your fellow riders are more than just names on an online scoreboard. And your teammates will be grateful if you show up, even if just for a short while to say hi and talk bikes.

If you’d like to join us at the welcome happy hour at Bier Baron on Tuesday Jan 10th, please go ahead and sign up on this Forum thread. It’s helpful to know roughly how many people to expect and how much food we should order in advance.

Hope to see you on January 10th! w&w
