Participantjrenaut – Considering you use your existing bike for every kind of riding you do, including commuting and utility/kids-in-trailer hauling, I think you’re easily justified!
I have my standard road bike which is for group/faster rides, etc. I recently got a folding bike to use both in place of the road bike for commuting (esp. on rainy days – I keep the fenders on) and as a travel/town bike. My road bike is out of action for a while right now so I’m actually really glad I bought the folding bike. (I do also have two cheap older bikes as spare spares…
but neither are all that great for riding more than a few miles on.)

ParticipantAnother accessory I need to buy for my commute? Oh no.

ParticipantThe Clymb generally has some pretty good deals imo, and stuff does sell out quite a bit there. Haven’t (yet) bought anything there myself although I suspect it’s only a matter of time.

ParticipantI may actually be there before 6:30pm. Strange as it sounds, 6:30pm is “late” for me – I’m usually done with dinner by 6pm. Also, I suspect their happy hour will be 4-7pm. I don’t need other people around to enjoy my beer anyway.

ParticipantDirt sure looks svelte in that kit! I noticed that at last week’s Friday coffee club.

ParticipantI no longer have an easy babysitter available (my mum was staying with us for a while) but I’ll try to make it. May has been my biggest cycling month ever, even though my main bike has been in the shop for half of it and there were quite a few days where I had no chance to ride.

Glad to hear that it’s possible to participate in this without any apps. Arlington area has a deep field, with the talents of CCrew
This is an old post to quote, but it just occurred to me – where is CCrew on this challenge? He has over 1000 miles in the Cascades challenge logged.

ParticipantHow did they measure how much Salazar sweat out? 😮

I thought that the bit about the salt volume in sweat was really interesting- I never used to have the eye-burning sweat thing ; now I do and it really sucks.
Same.

McLean is pretty bad for bike commuting. Unless you have direct access to Westmoreland (which has nice bike lanes), you are putting yourself in serious danger every time you bike commute.
I come home on Old Glebe to Kirby and both have sections with about as much shoulder as 123 coming up from the river does. It is very scary.
Old Dominion would be a great commuting option, but it also has little to no shoulder or sidewalk and during rush hour I would get pancaked.
So, luckily, I have access to Westmoreland. But going the same way each way every day gets boring – and it takes me about 2 milles out of the way.
Anyway. its all much better (just not safer) than driving.
Agreed. McLean sucks for cycling. The police don’t care either and they give the old favourite response of “cycling is getting more dangerous around here”, even though I’m pretty sure there are more and more cyclists and more bike lanes/sharrows.
Actually even Westmoreland isn’t the safest, especially south of Haycock towards the W&OD. At that point it has some serious potholes, no sharrows or bike lanes, and even north of Haycock there’s the middle school which means lots of impatient parent drivers, and school buses. I almost got left hooked there about a week ago (I had to brake suddenly). Some mornings I’ll actually take the sidewalk there.
If you’re worried about boredom and don’t mind hills, there are backstreet routes southwest of Old Dominion you can take (e.g. Valley Wood / Williamsburg / George Mason). Although I’ve almost been left hooked getting from there to the Custis as well (going downhill on Yorktown – where there is a bike lane but the paint has almost completely faded, and also going downhill on Lee Hwy where there is a clearly marked bike lane). Both times I had to brake suddenly enough that my rear tire came off the pavement; both times the driver sped past me on the left to turn right into a sidestreet in front of me, forcing me to react or crash.
I’m planning to experiment with a new route in June that takes me through the backstreets east of Westmoreland… Google Street View seems to indicate an option that’ll maybe be safer. I’ve had enough close calls that I’m now willing to take backstreets to the W&OD, even though a more direct commute via Old Dominion/Custis can get me to my office in under 9 miles (which I do on Friday mornings occasionally). Taking the W&OD makes my commute closer to 12 miles.
The McLean BTWD convoy used to go Kirby > Chesterbrook > Albemarle > N Glebe (120) > Old Dominion (309) > Lee Hwy > Quincy and then Custis to Roosevelt Bridge. That’s not too bad but if I was going to deal with Chesterbrook and climb Albemarle I’d rather go left on N Glebe and go up Old Glebe and cross Chain Bridge to go to the CCT.

ParticipantI grew up in a climate where it never gets much below 40F, and we would go riding on 100F+ days (although at least our destination was the beach). Anyway, I don’t mind hot weather either, or at least I used to not mind it. I seem to have adjusted my body through the last few winters and even 90F feels really warm now.
I think the winds were from the south yesterday – at least when I was crossing the Roosevelt Bridge.

ParticipantEnded up being not too bad – the headwind got to me more than the heat.

Yeah I noticed those this morning!
I almost always have a BikeArlington reflective band near my left ankle. The velcro is starting to lose it’s stick.

Don’t worry too much about tube size. Tubes are super stretchy and a smaller tube can work well in a bigger tire. What sizes are you talking about? The extreme example is the Fat Front Fixie. I’m running a 26×2.1″ tube in a 26×4″ tire. Come to think of it, I’m also running a 26×2.1″ tube in the 29×2.4″ rear tire on that bike.
20×1.1″ and 20×1.5″. These are 406 rims so ETRTO 28-406 (Durano) and 40-406 (Marathon Racer).

ParticipantThanks for the help! It’s always great to see a friendly face out there – but even more so when you’re stopped with an issue.
I’m thinking of swapping out that Durano for a brand new Marathon Racer I have in my basement – hopefully that will prevent any more immediate sidewall problems. (The only annoyance will be that the tubes for my front and rear wheel will then be different sizes.)
