Kudos on helping out. FWIW, I think at that size differential the tube would’ve been more than fine.

It’s an entertaining film but I won’t be sad if/when these sort of bike messengers become obsolete, and the tradition is relegated to video games/VR. They can then graduate to a non-messenger job, and racing SSCX.

The claim that it’s “underground” is not quite valid when there’s cyclists like that in megalopolises around the world. I’ve ridden in London (and been hit by a taxicab), and Copenhagen (which is very bike friendly), and some of the moves are pretty much death wishes.

It’s great they have that much bike control/handling, but it should only be used when you need it. Are these guys compensating much? The line about needing to do this to not feel like they are just punching in their time cards is sad.

Heard tonight that this poor guy from WWVC broke his hip on that crash a couple weeks ago. OUCH.

And I thought I would be watching today’s stage of the Colorado race tonight.

Do you know if the tube didn’t fit? Tubes are supposedly quite flexible in terms of what tires/wheels they will actually fit.

It doesn’t matter what you have if the motorist doesn’t actually stop or look around at all at the stop sign (and then claims to have later when you ask them) and it’s a neighbourhood at night without street lights . */grumble*

For radar watching days, I keep this image open on a browser tab and manually refresh as necessary. It might not be internet-etiquette friendly to link directly to it, and it could change without notice, but the washington post website is a bit heavy on javascript and slow loading for my liking. I don’t care for a lot of the ubiquitous social linking stuff that’s on most media pages, and I don’t want to read news articles when I just want the radar map.

I got drenched yesterday too. Then I got a flat coming down MacArthur Blvd :D I was pleased I could change it out in ~10mins with slimy hands in the rain, and even more pleased not to flat again on the way home (the pump I usually carry can’t do 90psi).

If you want to avoid the rain just ride in the opposite direction to me, I have been nailed three days in a row when I was certain I was safely home… perhaps my forks function as some strange Dowser tool?

I think I might have seen you a couple days ago, do you ride the Custis eastbound in the PM?

Ack, sorry to hear about your crash! Sounds like you survived ok for the most part, and yes, you will look badass.

I had my first crash less than 1 month after buying my first road bike, and broke my arm. I’ve since been fortunate enough to crash more gracefully since then (the last time I went over the handlebars but somehow landed on a grassy traffic island and only had a scrape on my ankle, a slightly shifted right shifter and some scratches on the front rim). :D

Ooh, I want one. Every time I get home from riding when the kids are home, my 2 year old walks up to me and says, “Sweaty?”

Yeah my son always says “you’re too sweaty” (for hugs) when I get home. Not much I can do about that.

Generally (very generally), knee pain on the bike for me is caused by
    – seat too low
    – riding with knees too far out
    – mashing without warming up at all

I have actually realized I can stubbornly cycle through the pain when it’s low level – if I keep riding at a good cadence and smooth-as-possible pedal stroke the pain will actually go away! But I am most definitely not a doctor. This is just an anecdote, and I have only ever been diagnosed with patellar tendonitis – nothing too serious as far as I know.

If I have been riding a lot of climbing miles (or miles in general) or I am anticipating doing so I will sometimes wear one of my good ol’ knee braces. It has a band that I position under the patella — I find it helps to reinforce my knee a lot.
