Oh, yeah, MVT South of Old Town for a couple of miles was pretty sketchy yesterday. Both huge deposits of debris and large washed out areas.

Riders going southbound were hopping on the GW Parkway riding opposed to traffic – can I suggest that people not do this. Please.

Would be great to know when those get cleared out.

Can I ask a semi-thread-jack? Is walking against traffic something written into law or merely common sense? Lately I seem to be encountering an inordinate number of pedestrians on the road walking with traffic, and I’m wondering what the deal is. Is it possible that these people – runners, people with kids in strollers, i.e. people who seemingly should know better – just truly don’t know?

Perhaps I’m just searching for a logical explanation for people flouting the rules besides simply not caring.

Cyclists have to realize that they have a bad rap–that I don’t think is deserved, but we must be ambassadors until society catches up. The disdain that drivers have toward us is really scary.

I think we all need to ride with this on our minds all the time. We can choose to either reinforce the negative things people already think or surprise them and open their minds with our safe and courteous behavior.

I popped out to the MVT in Crystal City where I work, and it’s not awesome. Very patchy. It’s passable in places, but the overpasses really aren’t suitable for anyone without studs. Certainly not a CaBi ride. Thick, uneven ice. It was sucky going enough on foot. The underpass to Crystal City was per usual an ice rink. Not a lot of melting happening out there, and the forecast for tonight is giving me the blues:(

Just want to extend a general thank you to all of you who post trail reports. I often rely on you more intrepid folks to help me make my do I/don’t I decisions about riding into work or home. It’s highly appreciated.:)

The sign reemerged at the intersection I mentioned before – MVT & Madison St. Somebody is on a mission.

I was out running the MVT this morning. When I came to the intersection in front of the Old Town Sport and Health, I saw two cyclists coming down Madison. There is a stop sign on Madison and a crosswalk for trail traffic, but, running defensively, I slowed to see what they were going to do. (I was wearing reflectives and a headlamp, so no way they didn’t see me.) Instead of stopping, they blew the stop sign and turned onto the trail. Not a big deal – it was 6 am, no cars, and none of us were going very fast (although a wave or “thank you” would have been nice.) But if we’re talking about following rules, they certainly didn’t.

It made me think of this thread. Perhaps, if there was a complaint it came from a pedestrian, not a driver. Would better explain the placement of the sign. I have seen lots of near misses and altercations between bikes and peds at the intersection of King St. and Union. People (often tourists) tend to amble across the street, and bikes just wanna get on through. My experience with cars, both on bike and foot, mirrors paulg. With a stop sign on every block, drivers generally aren’t in a hot hurry around there.

Still, of all the bad behavior to call out and methods to do so, seems pretty weird.

And, of course, the East end of King St. connects to the Mt. Vernon trail and would be a logical link to Crystal City (and the rest of Arlington when the stations start filling in there.) I like it – I like it a lot!

That would be great. I’d love to see stations in that area.

I was going to post the same thing – really great “on the ground” look at a Grand Tour you’ll never get from Phil and Paul on Versus. And I love Phil and Paul.

Yup, I own that one, too! And the soundtrack;)

You can’t have a bike movie thread and not mention 24 Solo, about Bike Arlington’s own Chris Eatough in his bid to win his 7th 24 hour solo world championship! Netflix says it’s available, but it sat in my Saved list for ages. So I bought a copy. http://www.grippedstore.com/ I was able to get another Gripped film from Netflix, Off Road to Athens, which is equally entertaining.
