#1 is wrong. There is a covenient driveway-type ramp northbound trail access.

Well, sorta. There are two access points, but neither is wide enough to accommodate the width of a car. One set of tires would still have to go up a curb. http://goo.gl/maps/Wilse

So Strava uses Friel to auto calculate zones? Just curious, not a Pro member. HR zones, depending in who you listen to, can be calculated based on widely varying percentages. A Friel Zone 1 is different than a Coggin or a Carmichael Zone 1. I know of 2 coaches who also do it slightly differently. Kinda frustrating actually.

That said, the fact that NicDiesel didn’t spend any time in Zone 1 (whichever one it is) on that ride seems rather fishy. Even during a race, you’re gonna dip down and recover for a moment. And holding threshold/VO2 max is exactly what competitive athletes do interval workouts for, and, honestly, if you haven’t done any kind of threshold training, the likelihood of being able to stay in that zone for 60% of the ride is rather small. Things are definitely off.

Fort Hunt is my choice for testing. Minimal crowds and one stop sign that’s relatively safe to, uh, you know, not stop at (shhhh). Check that Strava segment — it’s a hot spot for local TT specialists to whip each other. I have no idea how they go that fast.

    Hi folks,

An update to my team’s Tour viewing event and fundraiser this upcoming weekend.
    – We’re watching Stage 15 (longest of this year’s Tour) this Sunday, July 14th at the Arlington Cinema & Drafthouse. Door 7pm, show starts at 8pm.
    – We’ll have raffles for lots of gear from our sponsors (Formula Brakes, Beet It, SRAM, KMC Chains, Mad Alchemy and more) as well as silent auctions for a week at 2 different NC beach houses, tune-ups from Trifecta Tuning (ask me about them if you haven’t heard), and O’s tickets.
    – Proceeds benefit Companions for Heroes, an organization that matches shelter companion dogs with veterans and active duty military facing psychological challenges resulting from their service.

Tickets are FREE (with a suggested donation), but you do need one so we don’t overbook the venue. → Reserve your seats here.

If you have any folks who you think might be interested, please feel free to share the attached flyer.

I think one major problem with texting while driving is that lots of people really don’t think it’s dangerous. They think that _they_ are great drivers and can handle taking their eyes off the road.

Guilty. I ain’t gonna lie — I only recently decided to always put the phone down when I drive. I made excuses. (I’m not texting! I’m reading a text.)

I’m often caught in a situation as a passenger when I’m made super uncomfortable b/c the driver is jacking with their phone. You can’t really say anything. I’ve had to say “red light!” or “brake lights!” or “be careful” to a driver b/c I’m actually watching the road while they’re looking at the phone. And it surprises me when I offer to navigate or type a text message for them how many people actually say no! Now I can at least say it’s illegal.

BA rider walking his poor, flatted bike across the 14th St. Bridge: I recently had a flat myself, which is why I didn’t have a tube to stop and offer you. Hope it wasn’t too arduous a walk to wherever you were going or someone else stopped. It was a nice morning at least!

The answer is pretty much the same for MoCo as it is for NoVa. What kind of experience do you want? I suppose, if push came to shove, I wouldn’t say you need a mountain bike depending on your skill level. Will you be hating life for many moments of the day? Heck yeah. The twisty stuff at Clopper Lake. The roots at Schaeffer. Those will suck.

Ms. SUV driver on Potomac Ave: I’d be happy to debate with you where a cyclist should ride his or her bicycle or explain to you why we do what we do. I’m totally reasonable. No need to point wildly to the crappy path next to the road I won’t ride my 23mm tires on or turn on the turbo when you see me catching up to you. I don’t bite, but I don’t respond to frantic gesticulating either. Please use your words. Unfortunately for you, at present the law permits my riding on the road, and, no matter your opinion on my presence there, it requires you to give me safe passing distance. Next time, please take the 10 seconds it would require to slow down (Shouldn’t require much as I’m sure you’re not crushing the 25mph speed limit.) to accommodate such a pass. Hope to see you again soon.

Yeah, bars are a little like saddle when it comes to personal preference.

I think this is kinda what it comes down to with bars. There are so many options, so many shapes that I honestly think the best thing to do is shop around and actually put something in your hands. I still haven’t found anything I’m 100% sold on (that I can afford). I learned the hard way that I like compact drops, but I hate the kind that flare. I was also measured to have a 38cm bar, but that feels too narrow to me. (Anybody want a Ritchey Comp Curve 38cm? ;-)

Report from a friend is that the W&OD Wilson tunnel is flooded to hub level right now. Maybe cross at street level.

Freaking crazy- did the course really double back on itself without any dividing cones right after a tunnel?

In years past, there were dividers there. For the life of me, I can’t understand why they weren’t there.
