NPS hasr three foot high stone walls along the Parkway in the area, so there is a precedent.

My favorite is the wall on 123 eastbound over the GWMP where the GWPM offramps onto 123, which has been hit several times in the last couple of years. Imagine being so bad at driving that you hit a wall on the **inside** of a merge area.

Well of course speed is a factor for crashes/incidents all along the GWMP, but this spot and the incidents that happen there are pretty unique and speed on its own can’t explain it. The physics of it just don’t add up…going off the right side of the road in a sweeping right turn is exactly the opposite of what should happen when taking a corner too fast. So what about the road design in this particular area contributes to these incidents? Like it or not, the speed issues aren’t likely to be addressed, but if there’s a road design issue that’s contributing to these issues (maybe the merge from S Arlington Blvd plays a role?), then those seem like the places where NPS may be more willing to take action (in addition to some sort of physical barrier to protect the trail). But if the solution is “people just need to slow down,” well…good luck with that.

I’ve seen the direct aftermath of at least two in the last 2-3 years and I’m seriously baffled about why this happens. Whenever I drive the GWMP through that section I think “what is going on here that would force me off the right side of the road on a right-handed curve with decent sightlines?” I can’t figure it out.

    hi

    working in reverse:

1 from north tysons: spring hill / international drive / jones branch – go north on Spring Hill, under 267 (toll road)
2 from Spring Hill Rd make a right at the light, eastbound, on Lewinsville Road (this has a bike lane, but there is a narrow section just on the west side of the beltway, at a hillcrest)
3 cross over beltway on Lewinsville Rd
4 continue past 123/Chain Bridge (note: Lewinsville changes to Great Falls St when you cross 123)
5 left at next light “(Old) Chain Bridge Road”
6 right at next light Westmoreland St
7 make a left just after McLean HS on Old Chesterbook, large crosswalk area, HS kids, so beware
8 left at stop sign on Kirby Road
9 right on Chesterbook Rd, another stop sign
10 left at light for Glebe Road
11 quick right on Old Glebe Road
12 old Glebe Road crosses Glebe and drops you into a neighborhood, follow Randolf to the right, and get ready for a steep descent, dropping you onto the paved trail and then to the sidewalk over Chain Bridge itself (see below)
13 at the end of the bridge, take the ramp down to the C&O canal trail/towpath
14 east on towpath to the tressel from the Cap Cresent Trail. Walk/carry up the stairs, take the CCT over the canal and Canal Road
15 just over the tressel, look for a dirt path on your right, take/walk that down and pick up Arizona Avenue north bound, you can snake up to Bethesda via neighborhood roads (or stay on CCT up to your hood)

    (first post!)

I’d amend this to just take Glebe, either starting from Chesterbrook or from Old Glebe. I’d rather take the lane down the hill and then cross over to the Chain Bridge sidepath than deal with descending 41st St.

I think I’ll likely drive down Thursday, and head back up Sunday or Monday.

If anyone is interested in sharing a house (Judd, TwoWheels, SteveO, anyone else registered…), let me know. I’m happy to do some research on airbnb. I can also take one more person + bike with me if someone needs a ride.

Sunyata–can you send me the approx location of where team bikenetic will be? I can see what else is available around that area. I did a quick scan of the emerald isle and it looks like there are still some 3-6 person houses available for under $150 a night.

I made a fully-refundable hotel reservation just in case, but would definitely share an Airbnb. And I will humbly submit my name for consideration to take the ride-down slot :D

Does this apply only in DC streets, or everywhere to include the multi-use paths? If it covers the paths, is there a similar rule/fine for pedestrians?

    Per DC regs on bikes:

Title 18-1200: This chapter shall apply to all bicycles operated upon all public space in the District of Columbia.

So the answer to the first question is “yes,” and to the second is “no” (which is one reason this rule is stupid).

This incident sucks and I’m sorry. The guy on a bike in the story sounds like a serious dipshit.

It also happens that your take is a steaming pile of garbage.

I’m considering a new job in the north part of Tyson’s Corner, around Westpark. I’ve seen a commuting route that goes down the Capital Crescent Trail, over Chain Bridge, Williamsburg Blvd., WO&D, and up Gallows Road. Is this really doable? Any better options? I’m not worried about the mileage, I used to bike commute 36 miles/day every day no problem. Just worried about traffic and cars. Thanks.

Instead of Chain Bridge to Williamsburg, you could just take Chain Bridge to 123 to Lewisville, to Spring Hill. It’s not the most warm-and-fuzzy route, but I do a chunk of it every day and have done the 123>Lewinsville>Spring Hill route many times, and it’s not as bad as it seems.

I recently purchased a set of Twin Six Winter Bib *Pants* and holy shit they’re amazing. I’m generally not a fan of Twin Six apparel, but these are definitely an exception. Warmer and less constricting than my other cold-weather tights, and they fit over winter boots, which my other tights do not (the exception being the Amfibs). Highly recommend.

I think that is the one notion I wish I’d remembered/been more cognizant of when I started biking more/year-round and set about acquiring suitable stuff. While a lot of the gear suggestions/tips are widely applicable, when they are applicable can vary greatly from person to person, so there’s potentially a fair amount of trail and error involved. And some things (for me, it’s lobster gloves) that may work great for a lot of people just may not be right for you.

I was thinking that this morning as I passed people wearing only what looked like light jackets, but with full-face neoprene masks on…meanwhile I was under like 3 layers on my torso, but with nothing covering my face.
