Did anyone who biked this last year see how bad parking was at Gravely Point?

This will be my husband’s first bike ride in about 2 years, and he’s made it clear he can’t handle the full ride from S. Alexandria to DC, 20 mile DC Bike Ride, and then back home, so I’m trying to find a closer place to park and then ride into the city. Gravely Point seems the obvious choice, but I’m worried it might be a nuthouse. Does anyone remember it being crazy last year?

My other option is parking at the shopping center at the Rt 1 and 4 MRT intersection or in Del Ray, but that’s a few extra miles out. My husband chickens out on these things all the time at the last minute, so I’m really hoping to find something close enough to get him back on his bike so he can remember how awesome it is and begin riding to work again soon.

Long Bridge Park might be an option. Going through LBJ Grove will obviously take a little longer but it’s probably better than Potomac Yards.

Just noticed yesterday that at some point, the roots busting out of the pavement on the Mount Vernon Trail right at the connection with the 4MR trail (southbound side) have been removed and the little patch there is now level. Thanks to whomever addressed that!

I signed up for tonight’s beginner race, but I’m feeling rough right now. I think I pushed myself too hard this weekend and my lungs are still sore and full of the good stuff and can’t stop coughing. Plus I’m going out west on Sunday and don’t want to damage myself any more than I already am.

I know there’s a slim chance, but anyone know if I can postpone my entry to tonight’s race until the one 2 weeks from now? Or who I can contact?

There’s an “Email Promoter” button in the BikeReg registration confirmation email that takes you to a contact form. I’m not sure about transferring but I emailed last night about refunding my fees for the beginner race (not going to make it in time) and Bill responded very quickly.

Acording to the map above ohio drive will be closed between there.

So “street closure” does include the pedestrian path along the Potomac? That’s what I’ve been trying to figure out.

For the record, Park Police informed me over Twitter that there WILL be bike and pedestrian access on Memorial Bridge tomorrow.

Not exactly the same area, but does anyone have insight into how street closures around the Lincoln Memorial tomorrow will affect us? https://inauguration.dc.gov/node/1210150

Typically I come over the 14th Street Bridge, then up Ohio to the RCP Trail. I’m trying to figure out if there will still be access to the trail that goes along Ohio or if the whole thing will be closed off. I’d rather just ride up to the Roosevelt or Key Bridge if it’s the latter.

Has anyone else had a chance to ride the detour? Curious how it is working for folks.

I used it yesterday and today, no complaints. Admittedly, I’m going under Mt. Vernon in both directions, just being very careful for oncoming traffic when heading eastbound. Volume as been light, though, so no issues so far.

And I also saw a guy take the lane on Washington Blvd north of the Pentagon heading towards Memorial Bridge, which I’ve never seen before (and frankly never even contemplated).

I would see that once every couple of months back when Washington Boulevard was my commute. Never understood it, either, especially during rush hour.

I’ll be riding in from Fairfax to the ride and am looking for a good way through DC. I don’t ride much in DC and am hoping someone can advise me if there’s a better route or warn me if my current route is suicidal:

I can come in via any of the Potomac crossings if that’s a better choice. Thanks for your advice and I hope to see some familiar faces tomorrow!

Looks fine to me, traffic is usually pretty light on early weekend mornings so you shouldn’t have many issues. Alternatively, use the Mall to get across town, then head north from the Capitol and hop on the 1st St. NE cycletrack and follow that to the MBT.

This evening, just after 6:00pm, on 4MR just after the MVT junction:

You had on what I believe was a white jersey with red stripes, and spent most of the time between the junction and the water treatment plant yelling at another rider about a bad pass she made earlier by the airport. I was in front of her and didn’t see exactly what happened, nor did I hear what she called you, but your reaction and behavior towards her was completely inappropriate. First of all, it’s unproductive to address bad cyclist behavior with that kind of anger. Second, she apologized, why did you continue to yell at her until she turned off the path? It appeared to me more like you were bullying her than trying to accomplish anything. I’d think after you 25 years riding these paths, you would have learned better behavior in these situations. It was embarrassing to me as a cyclist and as a person to witness.

I’m still seeing Strava tracks on the normal 4MR to/from the airport. Does anyone have any idea when the trail will be closed and the detour mandatory? I have been using the detour, but if it is not necessary, I am happy to skip it.

It’s been open all this week, no construction equipment to be seen other than the plastic fencing.

With Bikes for the World’s warehouse clearance sale this weekend, you can probably pick up a frame (and other parts) for super cheap.

Take New Hampshire through the circle intersection with Virginia, past the Watergate. Turn right at F Street/the Kennedy Center, and follow that down to the crosswalk that crosses Rock Creek Park. The pedestrian light there takes a couple minutes, usually, but then you can just take the Rock Creek Trail south, cross the street at the jughandle, and keep following the trail under the Memorial Bridge until you hit Ohio Drive.

I imagine straight along the Pike or one of the parallel roads until you hit the 27 underpass, then just take the lane past the Memorial down the hill to the intersection with S. Joyce. Turn onto Joyce and follow that down, right on Hayes, and you’re there.

Please note: Although much of the trail will be closed for the duration of the project, access between the downstream section of the Four Mile Run trail (connecting to the Mount Vernon Trail) and S. Eads Street will remain open until approximately August 2017. Updated detour information will be posted at that time.

Will the stretch of the trail between S. Eads and the MVT connection also be undergoing renovations? And at that point, do you expect the section behind the water treatment plant to be open so that there will be access to the S. Eads bike lane directly from 4MR?
