So I am on my lunch time bike ride today, going on the dirt (used to be grassy) area along Independence Ave NW, avoiding sidewalks at all costs – sidewalk is full of people.

Pardon my ignorance, but where is Independence Avenue NW? I thought it was all SW-SE? Trying to work out where you were riding that necessitated riding on the grass / dirt / dirt path

I take this route on the way home too. There’s probably enough room left for them to paint a new bike lane – once they even out the pavement on the edge of the road. It’s a bit scary in the meantime and the SUV’s don’t give you much room I had one yell at me to get on the sidewalk (and was astonished that he was a scotsman – who I would have thought would have known better).

I’m assuming they’ll come back and finish this some time?

Southwesterly wind is a tailwind for our ride home. No pedaling today, I’ll just hoist a sail!

Not for those heading through Arlington from DC (remember winds are reported as the direction they are coming from not going to).
Like the Custis Hill isn’t tough enough without 20- 55MPH headwinds!

There used to be a mirror there but it was washed away in one of our many recent floods (these are much more common now that most of Arlington is covered in concrete or pavement).
I run through there with my dog most mornings (before I jump on my bike and head to work). I have seen my fair share of accidents, especially in the dark mornings, where cyclists have wiped out a ninja or two. It scares the bejeebus out of me to be honest. I have my LED headlight on and shake my head vigourously going under that tunnel so that the beam reflects off all the surfaces and (hopefully) makes my presence known to any oncoming cyclists. I’ve also had a few bikes pass me when going down into the tunnel, which is very foolish but so far they have not met another bike coming the opposite way.

The section where the trail goes under the bridge at Courthouse road is now closed. If anyone has any information on an alternate route or how long this is going to be closed I would apprediate it. Thanks!

I was a contractor there too. It isn’t a big facility but believe me there is a shower room, not many people know about it – it is on the middle parking level. I very much doubt that they got rid of it. I will ask some of my ex-colleagues.

I start a new job in Jan 2012 which will have me working in SW DC for the first time. I’ll be at the Dept of Education building at the Potomac Center Plaza building at 550 12ST SW. Anyone have recommendations for bike parking and perhaps more importantly shower facilities? Google turns up nothing for gyms except for the Golds Gym at 3rd and D.

Coming from 20 years of working in NW DC I’m in shock at the total absence of gyms within a 3 block radius.

I used to work in that very same building (for HUD) and you will be pleased to find that there is a bike rack and a free shower / locker room area!

This would be the route that I take (and is one that I ride, a couple times a week). It’s probably the quickest and most direct route, though it does add in the danger of the GW Parkway crossing/Memorial Drive.

I rode a similar route when I used to work down there, only I used to cross on the memorial bridge (south side on the walkway) and then down Ohio drive to the Jefferson. Ohio gets very little traffic and is a nice ride along the river, but more importantly it eliminates the GW Parkway crossings.

Crossing light was out last night too!! so be very careful here. Last night heading West I noticed that the walk sign light was blown – so good luck getting cars to yield to you – it only came on as “the hand”. Of course if you are heading East you probably still have a walk light but not one that the traffic can see! so be very careful heading that way!!!

That bridge does need a wider path. Problem is that if they raise the height of the railing without widening the path it would be barely wide enough for 2 bikes going in opposite directions to pass each other – as you would give up over a foot to accomodate the additional handlebar. I guess it is prohibitively expensive to add width or another alternative, that would be to make it possible to access the path on the southside of the bridge and make that for east bound traffic, not sure how pratical that is either but as it currently stands the south bound path is uselesss as it ends on the ramp from R50 R110.

How easy is it to find bight colored, reasonably priced athletic clothing for men? Target had lots of bright great C9 stuff for women, but you go over to the men’s area and it’s all black, navy, gray, red (which is fine only by day), dark green, etc. When I look on Sierra Trading post, again the bright stuff is all for the ladies and the dark stuff is for the guys.

I think that is part of the problem…I’ve never seen tights that aren’t black grey or navy. Fortunately some have a strip of reflective material as do pretty much all running shoes (except for some of these new minimalist things). The other thing is that as a cyclist we are very aware of the need to be seen as we probaby do some of the trip in traffic lanes. Joggers/ runners are on a trail and don’t necessarily think of the need to be seen by bikes – or assume that the onus is on the bikes (as the peds generally have right of way).
