If you want to avoid riding on 7 (and most of Idylwood), you can turn right onto Hurst and then get on Virginia Lane. At the bottom, turn right onto Shreve and then left onto Fairwood just past the school. Fairwood is wide and lovely. Then a left on West street to get you back onto mikeglaces’ route.

Basically, if you ask ten cyclists, you’ll get twenty different route suggestions. There’s no one great option that stands out above the rest; each route has its positive and negative aspects. So it all depends on how you ascribe relative costs between the various criteria (hills, distance, difficult road crossings, riding in shared traffic, etc.)

My personal choices for routes vary a lot depending on time of day, weather, etc. I enjoy having lots of options for how to get places, and I appreciate that Arlington’s general bike-friendliness is why so many options exist.

Ha, true. I’ll almost always take the least stressful way. When driving I’ll also avoid left turns (without left-turn lights) and major roads.

The SO: “wait, why are you going this way?”
ME: “I’M NOT GETTING ON 495 NO WAY AND YOU CAN’T MAKE ME!”

I’ll muddy the waters even more.

I’d take 50 to Pershing to Edgewood, then get on dasgeh’s secret trail (it’s a wide, paved neighborhood path with some lovely houses — she pointed it out to me a few months ago) and stay on that back down to 50. Then go right on 50 (west bound) on the service road past Fillmore – the service road ends there but then a neighborhood path/trail starts there. Just be careful crossing Fillmore from service road to the path. Stay on that path/trail to Irving and cross 50 at Irving (for a little extra adventure, take the raised bridge!). Then stay on Irving down to 9th, make a left to come back over to Fillmore/Walter Reed.

I’m not a fan of Fillmore around 50. It’s narrow and there’s no bike path. Doable? Sure. Awful? Not really. But I’d rather do the slightly longer, much more pleasant route.

It was the only part of the ride where I was happy to have forgotten to re-inflate my tires after taking this bike off the trainer. My front was *really* low.

Big patch of ice on Penna Ave in G-Town inbound into DC just past the Four Seasons and the exit ramp from Rock Creek Parkway (basically on the bridge over RCP). I was tucked in behind a Circulator bus so I didn’t see it until I was ON it. That was a nice “ooooooooooooh sheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet!” moment.

I picked up a pair of the REI Co-Op softshell pants – they’re similar to the TwinSix ones above but on clearance they were only $35. (And no bibs – bibs…yuck)

It doesn’t make sense to widen a small segment with 6 stop signs. Almost everyone is not stopping or slowing down now, are they going to stop or slow down when the trail widen? Most likely we would get complaints from drivers calling for enforcement. So why widen it at all? My concern though is not the stop signs, but unsafe passes, and keeping on doing it outside the small wide segment. For FC, it’s all revenue.

“As Feuchtner mentioned, however, he hopes that the success of the split lanes will cause the changes to spread east and west of the City, making the improvements uniform rather than unique.”

    Emphasis mine.

My ears, face and top of my head get really cold sub freezing. I have a full-face mtb helmet with a removable chin guard and it covers my ears completely. I didn’t buy it for winter commuting, but it’s sure comes in handy.

If it makes trollheim and the MVT even marginally better, the detours will be worth it. I think by then we should be in our new office building down at the Wharf (!!!) so I can just take W&OD/FMR/MVT up to 14th street. Although I guess I could do that even if we haven’t moved yet – it’s only a few miles more.

(I too have really been digging Key in the am – the just dawn views can’t be beat)

They have another model of carbon that … is also sold out. Too bad, but perhaps I can find some used or elsewhere. I could always run them with the current tubed tires at first and change to tubeless later. Might swing by Bikenetic this weekend too and see what they might say.

Someone is selling the WTB ci31 rims on Facebook right now – says they’re brand new. Unfortunately for them, they’re asking more than Jenson, the link to which they provided! Doh! Anyway, they’re on Jenson right now for $540.

I just got two pair of winter tights, two jackets and a pair of winter gloves from Nashbar for $100. Going to try to make it out to Performance in the new few days.

I’m kinda sad about this – performance brand clothes have always been a good value.

Nashbar has Lake 303 boots in wide and regular – $219.99 plus an additional 30% off so $154. (reg is $10 more)

When the SO was in an apt, he was able to make use of an on-site private storage room (not a shared bike room, although the apt building did have one). It was about the size of a small WIC.

I don’t have a bike room in my building nor would I ever use it. I have five bikes in my 750 square foot apt and my cat doesn’t seem to mind. It IS tough not having a place to work on my bike. It can be done in our shared garage but it’s not ideal.
