Participant1/8/2024 – Final
Stopped by the National Military Family Association on Eisenhower Avenue in Alexandria. This office also includes the administrative offices for “Final Salute, Inc.,” a locally based, female veteran-founded and run service organization whose mission is to help homeless female veterans. Final Salute gets a 97% rating on Charity Navigator. The offices were closed when I stopped by but I got a picture through their door. https://www.finalsaluteinc.org/Home.html

ParticipantI really like my outbound helmet mounted light. It has variable settings and works well. I also have bike mounted front and rear lights and a reflective strappy vest that I mounted a rechargeable red light on.

This church was a 7-11 in 1970 when a 19 year old black man, Robin Gibson, was murdered by a white clerk who then planted a knife on Gibson’s body to claim he was attacked.
The murder ignited racial tensions in Alexandria. Ira Robinson, a black activist, helped ease tensions, but there was violence across the city for several nights. Robinson was later elected as the first black member of the city council. The clerk was charged with murder and later pled guilty to manslaughter. Robin Gibson is buried in Coleman Cemetery in Fort Hunt. I am sure his family must still miss him.
It seems fitting that the site of young Gibson’s death is now a house of prayer.

This house was built in 1894, and it is one of the oldest houses in College Park. It is also the only one that I would label a Victorian.
My little friends and I visited it this morning.
… No one specified the century.

1/7/23 The 90’s
My kids were born in the 90’s and one of the iconic toys from that period was a series called, ‘Rescue Heroes”. My son had quite a few of them but they were passed on to other kids as he got older. My mom still has one at her house for him to play with. (At age 26!)
Billy Blazes was the firefighter – and this photo represents he and all of his colleagues who are truly Rescue Heroes.

My kiddos LOVED “Rescue Heroes,” Eskridge the movie. We can all still sing the movie theme song!
