Good to hear Franconia is getting some help. I avoid it mostly as it just seems to fast and dangerous.

5:40 AM on the MVT from Four Mile Run to DC it was raining bugs. I counted roughly 4.6 million of them (oversized gnats). Well over 14,000 perished on impact with my face. I managed to eat only 2. Good ride, then!

I’d love to hear about the trip/route. My family loves Burke Lake but I really dislike all that driving…

It was a good ride and relatively easy minus a big hill or two. I just Google mapped it from Kingstown by bike and went for it. The route does require you to cross the parkway a couple times but I didn’t find that a problem. I got a bit confused at Rolling Road but another cyclist put me back on track. The trail along the parkway is relatively low traffic so that was nice too. 30 mile round trip from my house in Rose Hill. Good ride.

Let me know if you have any specific questions and I’ll see if I can help.

I’ve just given up trying to go fast during my commute, esp on my way home. Yes, it sucks to go way slower than I want to, but it’s just not safe to go really fast on the MVT. I’ll let someone else get in an accident, and I’ll just ride along and hope they don’t do something that causes my slow self to get hurt.

Same thing holds for weekend rides–even though the MVT has way less stop signs and street crossings, I stick to the W&OD since it’s typically wider and less crowded, especially as you get further out. It’s more conducive for riding fast. Plus the W&OD has Green Lizard Cycling, and I’m kinda in love with their smoothies…

Everybody passes me on the MVT and I’m reasonably fit. I chalk it up to the fact that I’m not a racer, I always have a pack on my back, and I’m assuming the speeders haven’t been out riding as long as me so they’ve got fresh legs. Or maybe I’m just slow!

At any rate there’s only so many spots to go full gas before I inevitably have to slow down for safety. I’m happy to amble along at a cozy pace. It seems it’s always crowded between the airport and Old Town anyway so I gave up trying to race through.

I used to enjoy the MVT when I began commuting last year. Now I dread it, unless it’s after dark or before sunrise. I think the last straw was late last summer when a pathlete in brown kit (I call him the UPS racer) passed me rather closely. I caught up to him a mile later because he’d stopped to stare at his iPhone IN THE MIDDLE OF THE PATH!

I’m in. Already logging miles but I guess they don’t count yet. Good practice anyway.

I don’t know about a hard copy but I just Google mapped it a couple days back as I wanted to find a route from Alexandria to Burke Lake and of course it worked quite nicely.

I’m confused. Has your child spent the last three years in your house? How does he/she go anywhere?

It’s three children and since I only started cycling again a year ago I’m not exactly geared up.

No worries. All are welcome to join the game at any time. Not sure what you did to get in trouble with your family, but once they realize their error, hopefully we’ll see you back on the bike.

I am “Mr Mom” and that equals little time to ride. Some weeks are better than others. I suppose I should invest in a trailer or kid seat for my 3 year old. At least I could squeeze in some extra mileage that way!

Sorry to upset the flow. See, I didn’t read the rules.

The Giant Anyroad might fit the bill but I don’t think the custom racks are available in the US right now. Perhaps another rack is workable. I just bought this Anyroad 1 ($1300) a few weeks ago. I had no intention of buying it but when I rode it the thing just screamed fun and it’s extremely comfortable. It’s not very traditional looking but a most enjoyable ride anyway.
