ParticipantI ride with headphones. I’m listening to NPR so I can always hear a pass, but I’ve trained myself to check my six when changing my line. Saved my ass many times from a non caller.

It’s possible to safely aim for a high speed on that short section of the Custis, and there’s no side-entry possibilities, and the upturn of the hill will quickly slow you. That said, top speed efforts are generally best left to the roads. Military Road, just north of there, is a good place for that – smooth asphalt, good sight lines, etc.
And yep, hit 51mph coming down Mt. Weather last weekend. We’ll not discuss my speed going up it.
I always make sure the way is clear on the top of the second hill or else I abort my speed attempt.

I think he’s referring to the double hill just after Glebe Road when you are coming inbound.
I would suggest ballast — some bricks in your backpack or panniers.

Thats the spot, the 2nd hill. I carry my own ballast thankyouverymuch.

ParticipantCaution: texters ahead

ParticipantThat’s unusual. I usually see most district “official vehicles” parked at Costco during lunchtime while their drivers are inside hitting up the free samples.
