ParticipantWhat a great post. I think it has a lot to do with the perception of cycling as a fitness activity, which to a large part is self imposed by the cycling community. The result of this is that people think it is hard and requires great fitness. I know that’s why I got into cycling…my knees hurt from running and I wanted to stay fit. But over time you start to understand that to get a great workout out of cycling usually requires hours on the bike (road bikes especially, I know fat wheel bikes can be must harder), because they are TOO efficient. So in reality, most rides don’t require a ton of effort, and can get you places really easily. It is safe, reliable, and cheap, and while it’s not the greatest workout ever, it at least has a positive health benefit. Probably more than the physical health benefits are the mental health benefits associated with being out of traffic and congestion.
This post just really hit home as I was just talking with my brother in Cincinnati about their terrible bike infrastructure. He jokingly called me “green” and I had to admit that my love of cycling doesn’t come from any sort of environmental concern, even though it makes me happy that cycling has a positive impact there. I just think many times it is the best form of transportation. It’s as simple as that.Steve

BTW, it seems like we have a critical mass of ~2 year olds around here… We should have a kid friendly happy hour.
I 100% thought that the sentence above was going to end in, “…..We should have a balance bike race.”

ParticipantI haven’t rode much in the last two weeks, in part because of moving offices. I got to do my new commute this morning for the first time, and it was a blast. I now have another river/bridge crossing (South Capitol Street Bridge), and I can’t wait until the afternoon to be riding back into DC to see the view. And for the first time I have a shower in my building! Things are looking up….

Apparently he has rented space at Pershing and Washington Blvd, near the old Whiteys (see if anyone remembers Whiteys) – where he is gonna set up a used bike shop – he is apparently just waiting on Arlington to clear his permits.
Yep, it’s “The Old Bike Shop.” Hopefully it opens soon!

Aw man, looks like Salsa isn’t making the Casseroll this year.
I’ll have to cross it off my covet list.
I remembered seeing that someone on here wanted the Casseroll, not sure the size you’d need, but I came accross one today on CL (please don’t judge my daily CL search for a nice Surly or Salsa commuter): http://washingtondc.craigslist.org/nva/bik/3437127407.html

Throwing this out for discussion:
* Meet Thursday Dec. 27 at the Green Turtle (or some place bike friendly) in Ballston at 6 pm
* Tour Arlington holiday lights (having identified some on the map by then hopefully)
* Return and drink something hot (or cold)I think that’s a great idea. I’m sad to say that I can’t make it, as my holidays involve being back in the Midwest (Cincinnati, OH and Battle Creek, MI). I hope this ride works out though, and figure it could result in a really nice “Pictures” thread. Best of luck, and hopefully I’ll get one scheduled for January as well.

How about resurrecting a holiday lights ride?
I thought about that, but unfortunately I don’t know where to do it in terms of where some good lights are. If someone knows of some good houses or neighborhoods with lots of lights, I’d be happy to try to help out and try to set up a ride.
The ride I am currently thinking about in January would be Capitol City Brewery to Port City Brewery. I just need to do a little exploring to see if I can find a safe route to make it happen.

Steve,
I made a last minute decision to try to meet up with you guys but underestimated the time it would take me to ride there from Shirlington. Enjoyed the nice open trails and a warm-up at Northside Social though. (I wonder how many miles one has to ride to burn off a bacon, blue cheese and date scone. I’m not sure 12 was enough, but maybe riding against a headwind part of the way will help.
.
I hope ya’ll had a good ride. It’s great that you’re doing this! Will try to join you some other time.
Kathy
Kathy,
So sorry to have missed you. I think for a number or reasons (holiday, cold, wind, etc.) the ride wasn’t so successful, and so it didn’t quite happen. I must’ve just missed you on my ride home. Not to be deterred, I’ll be trying to set up another. December is a little hard with the holidays approaching, so my thought is a January ride. More to come on this one, and I appreciate your support!

Help me, I’m a lower W&OD noob. I always split off onto the Custis in EFC so I’m not familiar with how to get to Best Buns from the W&OD or 4MR. What is the best way there? i.e. where do you cross four mile run drive? -Thanks.
I would just ride the W&OD all the way until it dead ends at S. Shirlington Rd, and then ride the sidewalk on the west side of S. Shirlington down to the crosswalk that goes onto Quincy. Best Buns is just down Quincy next to Carlyle.

ParticipantJust thought I’d post a reminder that our first Arlington Group Ride will be this Saturday at 10:00. It should be a good way to get out and about over the long weekend. Hope to see some folks there!

The chainstays would be longer on a larger size but I don’t know if you rode a size that was too small or too large. In any case, it still might not be long enough, and maybe you’d need a less compact frame.
This was my initial though, but when I got home I looked up the geometry and saw that the chainstays are actually the same length for each size. Again, this might not affect most, and there might be a way to do the cabling slightly better to not have this problem, but I thought I’d call it to everyone’s attention in case you take it out for a test ride. I know sometimes you don’t notice everything in a test ride that you wish you did down the line…

We rode the Rove out in Washington last week. Awesome bike.

I was at Bikenetic yesterday and bored, so I took the Rove out for a short spin. I didn’t really love the handling (though it wasn’t the right size, so that’s probably at least part of the reason), but thought it was a fun bike to ride. I never ride fat tire bikes, so getting to fool around a little put me in a good mood.
One odd point that I wanted to make for those looking at it: because of where they put the rear disc brake mounts and the cabling, my heel would make contact with the barrel adjuster. This would have been a big problem for me, and will likely cross it off my list. I wear a 10.5-11, so for some people this might not pose a problem, but for a lot of people is will. Previous to this, the Rove was starting to challenge the Cross Check in my covet space.

ParticipantI’ve done the ride through ANCC a number of timed and never been bothered.
One good thing about the Ft. Meyer cut through is that going eastbound you can go through Arlington National Cemetary downhill which is a really cool ride. It is one-way, but for the morning commute it would be great.
Woops! Didn’t see that acorn already provided this.
