If Java shack sold beer I’d never leave.

They do, but they call it Northside Social :).

I’m sure that comment will invite some NS hating, because it’s a bit over priced and a little more stand-offish than Java Shack, but they have really good coffee and coffee related drinks, a surprisingly good beer selection, some decent wine, and a sizeable patio. What more can someone ask for?

BTW, I heard about a place (in Arlington or Alexandria, I think) that does in fact have used parts. Does anyone know if that’s true? I’d sure like to know what it’s called.

Velocity Co-Op in Del Ray (Alexandria) certainly does. My guess is Phoenix Bikes (Arlington) might also.

I was dreaming that the construction on the south side of Lee Hwy just past the entrance to 66W (and right beside the top of the bridge after the S Curve of Fun) would yield this. Alas…

To the original question, BicycleSpace. Great service, good selection, stand by the products they sell. The most recent bike I bought I could have gotten online, and probably saved a little, but I’m pretty sure Yuba would not have fixed all of the many problems, and BS has.

Yea, tho who knows if they are actually doing well, you know, financially. There’s probably a difference between what we as consumers want and think makes a shop good, and what actually works for a shop in the long run. We want a huge selection of random things, with super experienced mechanics, for a not-too-huge premium. I don’t know, it just seems hard.

Like GB said, making the shop more than a bike shop is probably becoming necessary, because buying accessories at a bike shop just doens’t make that much sense.

The bad news: once I got the tire and tube on, I couldn’t get my pump to go on the schrader valve.

Great post! And good looking out!

As a total aside, just an fyi, most mini pumps can take both valves. They usually have some sort of screw off cap around where the valve goes in that you can unscrew. Then there are usually to pieces inside, a rubber part that actually holds the valve when it goes in, and a plastic piece it sits on top of. On most mini’s, you just flip the platic piece around and put it back in, and then flip the rubber piece (they kind of fit together). Anyways, you pump might work for both without you even knowing it!

Here’s a video if my post doesn’t make sense, most are fairly similar: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WfKQLOXvtg8

Not to go too far on a tangent, but…..

I’ve noticed a lot of folks on here look at xtracycle as the longtail solution. Is there any reason that people like this over the Surly Big Dummy, other than the fact that perhaps you have told your children not to call each other dummies, and this would undermine your efforts?

I’m really conflicted on this, not at all sure how I actually feel.

When my brother visited me this summer, he wanted to go for like a 9 mile run, and so to ensure he didn’t get lost, I rode along side him. For part of his run, we went down Fairfax and Wilson from Ballston to Courthouse (and the reverse on the way home), and he ran in the bike lane there. It was early in the morning on the weekend, he was running at about 10mph, and so I thought it was pretty reasonable. In M St. thru Georgetown, I rode on the street and he ran on the sidewalk.

I guess I think lots of things matter. Time of day, sidewalk options/condition, etc. at 6 in the morning, things are quiet, bikes can easily ride around runners, and it’s not that big of a deal. Running on the street feels much better to lots of runners, especially those that log lots of miles. During rush hour, I tend to like it a little bit less, as going into the car travel lane isn’t always an option to pass, but then again I don’t get mad at slow cyclists that cause the same problem.

I guess if people are being predictable and courteous, then in general I’m ok with whatever.

This thread might have some good info for you: link.

Your best way to change or avoid that is probably to take the Case Bridge over the Waterfront. The bridge starts along the little road half way up Buckeye Dr (in Hains Point) behind the NPS HQ. It drops you at the North corner of 9th and Maine. From there you can cross 9th and go up to G, or take Maine for a block. I know you don’t like Maine, but from there at least you are entering it with a lower flow of traffic, not along Maine, and so going one block with only a few cars isn’t that bad. Anyways, hope that helps. Other options would be to take go up Ohio and then ride along the mall up to 4th, and ride that down to I St (or take Memorial Bridge if you are coming from the North on MVT.

Rod Smith? I don’t see it. I assume being mentioned in this thread rather than the “other one” is a good sign. Is this the bike?

I can’t believe I missed this post. I believe it is you indeed! The Rod Smith part is simply the beard, I think, as people in helmets going fast the other way pretty much look the same. I ride a yellow Cannondale or a green Surly, and believe we occasionally head nod in passing.

It should be noted that I was not the first to mistake you for Rod: http://bikearlingtonforum.com/showthread.php?636-OneEighth-Sighting/page195

Funny thing is, my Surly was easily worth more than my 1994 model year car, the Blue Book value on which was less than $1000.

    Because, I mean, you can’t put a price on a Surly. :)

I don’t have a locking one, but I very much like my Saris Bones. I don’t use it all that often, but it just feels much more solid than other similar racks. I found a used one on CL that wasn’t too bad price wise.

It’s a bit longer than my usual route, but is all back streets and controlled crossings at major streets.

Where does she need to go from Wakefield?

Thanks! I’m not totally sure, I think just a little southwest of Wakefield. She rides from home to the park regularly, so she knows how to get home from there, just didn’t know from there to CC.
