Also I’ve had squeaking where the rubber dust cap has become dried out at the contact point and a little lube around it has helped. It can be surprisingly loud.

I lived across the street from work in Crystal City for almost 5 years. It is wonderful. You have so much extra time in your day. If you really love riding, I don’t think it’ll stop you at all. It just eliminates some of the hassles that can go along with planning for commuting. You can go home for lunch, get little things done at home if you have to, it’s just great. I miss that commute.

I started commuting by bike basically because I loved riding and found it was one of the only ways to fit it into my schedule. When you have no commute at all, you can easily fit it into your schedule and do other things as well if you’d like.

Steve: Steve, AKA: The guy who could end up with a Green Surly Disc Trucker or other touring/cx bike if I sell my Cervelo S1. But usually on a Yellow Cannondale with red bar tape and tires.

The thread title always make me laugh and think about how lately a combination of the wind and my legs have been the biggest speed control barrier! Seriously, from 14th St. to Rosslyn is supposed to be the easy part of my ride home, not the hard part.

Maybe the guy making the art garden at the top of the ramp will take one of the barriers for up there?

I had a legitimate, two-way, recognized in time to say hi, sighting of DaveK yesterday on the trail near the Iwo Jima! So exciting!

BTW, the new traffic light on N Meade St at 14th St N is nice. Is that going to become permanent?

I believe so. I think this is where you are talking about: http://www.odestreet.com/2013/01/look-out-for-new-stops.html

My biggest one is coming down Fairfax thru VA Square when all the Reston Limo shuttles in front of the FDIC buildings park half way out into the bike lane and force me to take the lane during rush hour. Every day.

The cones in the middle of the cut-out appeared to be back today.

Yea, I generally don’t get too worked up on the decisions NPS has made in that area (such as the squared curb cuts and crossing situation), but that cone was in about the worst location possible.

I’ve never really thought of it as something the paramedics would use. More for cops or hospital or coroner. I agree with his sentiment that if a paramedic is needed to save your life, they’re going to do what they are trained to do, and don’t really care about who you are.

Agreed. Or even just people who find you. I figure if something happens to me on my bike, there’s a pretty good chance it’ll be on the trail. The first person to find me is likely to be another cyclist/runner. They’ll probably call 911 (I hope), but they might even call someone on my RoadID, especially if it’s not life threatening, like a concussion or something.

OK, I started a new team. It’s called Bike Arlington All Stars.

I will now be carrying extra water and a feed bag with me everywhere I ride so that I might call myself a domestique.

I can’t find information on the website to add a convoy, but I’d like to suggest the following route from Yorkshire Elementary School to Merrifield Mosaic District Pit Stop (15.8 miles), and continuing on to the W&OD towards DC. I envision leaving Yorkshire around 5:15 am, leaving Merrifield at 6:40, and arriving at Freedom Plaza around 8:00.

Yorkshire is where my wife works, very cool. She said she sees two folks in the a.m. many days riding on Old Centerville/616, perhaps it’s you?

I’m with Consularrider on this. And Dirt. I’m over the wind. I think the hardest part is that you have nothing to show for your hard work. On a hill, you work hard but at the end you can turn around and look down the hill and be proud that you climbed it. In the wind, you work hard and at end you turn around and look at a perfectly flat piece of beautiful trail that just smacked you in the face. And strava laughs at your speed.

Still loved the ride home tho.

My commute of 40-50 minutes is a bit longer than the 26 minutes average for my zip. That being said, I think we all probably compare ourselves not to our neighbors, but rather to our own commute via other methods. My metro + shuttle ride is around 1hr-1:15. So riding is much quicker. Driving would be around 20 minutes or so in the morning, and 30-1hr in the afternoon, so I guess I could save some time if I got a car.

As an aside, I love when people here ask me how long it takes me to get to work, and I say something like 40-42 minutes in the morning and 45-52 minutes or so in the afternoon. Gotta love the consistency of the bike commute.

Sorry to hear you’ve been sick. The answer to your thread ‘s question is: the first day of the year when it’s sunny and 70 degrees.

This is exactly what I was thinking! I’m usually not so sick that I can’t ride, but I certainly have called in sick so that I can ride. That being said, I do sometimes not ride when I’m really tired. The one thing I like about my metro ride is that I get a seat and I can sleep really well on the Metro. Sometimes if I’m really tired, I just want to be able to sleep on the way to work.

My general rule of thumb is to ride as long as it’s going to make me more happy than not riding. If you feel too sick to ride, don’t. If you think it’ll make you feel a little better, if only for the joy of getting out and spinning around, then do it. Just hope you feel better soon and that spring is easier on you.
