Just for any curious sorts, Bill is the person who teaches both the Basic Maintenance Class, as well as a Wheel Building Class (which I believe is now one-on-one) at Spokes.
I think you’ve found a *good* wheelbuilder!

you must ride late!
My current career does not allow for commuting by bike, but I when I can, I love to take a spin at night…

ParticipantNo, I am not doing a Hunter S. Thompson thing on my evening rides, I assure you! Ah, but my camera… is seeing bats. Big ones.

Yes, concrete to fix the wood. Lovely. Its been there for at least a week.
Where is this btw? Looks like W&OD westbound over Rt 7, Falls Church.

I call it the WO&D. I used to call it the “WOD” but no one knew what I was talking about. :p
I’m just as guilty. WO&D rolls off the tongue easier, even if it *should* be W&OD.

I’m personally a huge fan of pedal reflectors. As a driver, they are one of the most distinctive features screaming “bike!” in the dark. That said, if you’ve got a cheapo reflector that fell off I wouldn’t replace the pedals over it, and you probably can’t source a replacement. The reflective tape suggestion is probably a good one.
This is where I usually plug the pd-t780 as the ultimate commuter/touring/utility pedal.
Behold the reflective tape solution. That is the white part of the red/white “conspicuosity tape” trucks use. Sends a lot of light back. Easy to find in the auto parts stores. The same tape in amber (my first choice) has been decidely harder to find.
I am also a fan of pedal reflectors. They’ve been a part of the German commuter bike since well before… my 20 inch Rixe from 1961. And among the casual riders who are blissfully unaware of how invisible they are after dark, the only reflectors left on their bike are usually… the pedals.

This makes me want to upgrade!
There is this one, there is the Schmidt Edelux II (the updated IQ Premium optics with their trademark machined aluminum shell and glass lens, priced accordingly), and an even wilder pair from B+M- 2 Luxos models that, from pictures and photometrics I’ve seen, have an even wider beam at medium and close-in range. Imported and sold by *the* lighting geek, of course: http://www.peterwhitecycles.com/

ParticipantThe beam is so wide that those are shadows from my bar end shifter cables.
Oh, same sharp cutoff on the beam to keep from blinding your fellow commuters.

ParticipantNew update to old thread. Why? New light!
Starting with the old light (B+M LumoTec IQ Cyo Plus) which was state of the art in 2011… And going to the B+M LumoTec IQ Cyo T Premium. Brighter emitter and revised optics. Same camera, same wide open ISO3200 exposure, same less-than-steady hand at speed. But look what is possible now! Off the same “lowly” 6v 3w side mount generator.

Have you suggested it to ArlCo? They buy and install bike racks where needed…
Sent the same pic to BikeArlington, so…

Participantre: my pic back up the thread… Please don’t mention the street bike rack I cropped out. I’m trying to encourage the Clarendon Silver Diner to install bike racks, like Northside Social Club has across the street…

ParticipantMadison, in front of the museums, right?
I had to navigate that same section by car about 45 minutes earlier (I have this IT repair career that I cannot do by bike, sadly) and regretted it. Much time lost to tour buses completely blocking the travel lane.
