I plan on attending this protest against Trump on the day after the inauguration. I expect I’ll bike over and park in my work’s bike cage near the Mall and probably change clothes in the office too. I hope lots of people join the protest (you don’t have to be a woman!).

P.S. Folks coming in from out of town are asking for homes to stay in since the hotels are booked and very expensive.
We are hosting Family of Choice for this event. Though they don’t ride, so I am researching other options that don’t involve driving.

The BikeArlington blinkies use the very common (for a button cell battery) 2032 battery. Anything else will not fit. Sounds like you tried a 2016, which is thinner.
oh, and they must go in with the proper polarity, or you won’t get light. Another reason for proper polarity- the 2032 is a common battery used for the CMOS functions on a computer motherboard. There are warnings about the battery exploding if installed backwards. No, that hasn’t happened to me in my IT career… (Now watch the panic ensue,
) I know, shame on me…

Besides for the voltage the 4 digit code must match. The two letters just indicate the brand, e.g. DL=Duracell. CR is a generic designation with C meaning lithium and R meaning round.
I don’t know which type you use but all of my bike computers have used 2032. 20 means 20 mm diameter, and 32 means 3.2 mm thickness. You must have bought something with a lower last two digits than needed. I suspect that the drug store does carry the correct type. The BikeArlington blinkies use the very common (for a button cell battery) 2032 battery. Anything else will not fit. ParticipantDarn! I was out of town and missed the party. If they are planning to do this again, someone let all of us know!

On Tuesday, September 13, I rode from Vienna to Shirlington on the W&OD When I got to the beginning of the W&OD I decided to go around the circle and head back. The surface changes from asphalt to concrete near the circle. I slowed to about 5 mph and started the turn. One of my wheels got locked in a seam of the concrete. My forward momentum was arrested; both me and my bike were thrown to the left. The impact was absorbed almost entirely by my left femur, which was broken. A titanium pin and a few screws were inserted into the bone to stabilize it. I just got out of the hospital. I’ll be off my bike for at least six months. Over the years I have often been leery of concrete sections of the trails with big seams–a portion of the Custis comes to mind. I remember mentioning this to a friend about 20 years ago and he laughed off my concern. I hope this note serves as a warning to be careful at the circle in Shirlington, or anywhere else where there are big seams.
Wow. That is the circle at the very beginning of the W&OD? I almost went down myself rounding that section earlier this year. Same thing. 700×32’s on my bike, btw. Just narrow enough to be worrisome on seams. And yeah, the Custis Trail/sidewalk by the Marriot in Rosslyn. Also a worry, especially when I am leading shop rides through there.
Sorry you got hurt there. Heal up quick!

Resurrecting this to ask questions and not have any answers get lost in the “complain and/or brag about your evening bike ride” thread.
Do any of you have a dynamo not with a “see me type” light, but with a “see where I’m going on unlit roads at 15-20mph with oncoming car headlights in my eyes” light? And if so, what is it and how well does it perform that function?
I am aware of peterwhite website and all the pictures of beam patterns, but… perhaps it’s just me but I don’t feel like 2D still photographs on a computer screen give me a very good sense of the kind of visibility I’d have moving at speed in the [greater than two]-dimensional real world. It’d be nice to know about people’s actual experiences. And maybe even see some lights at work.
Amalitza: Hi. I have pictures, if that would help…

On my olde Trek, running the B+M LumoTec IQ Cyo T Premium (the IQ Premium optics), taken at about 11 mph. You’ll recognize where- W&OD under Route 50. With a B+M *sidepull* generator (!) Oh, the dark lines at either side? My barcon shifter cables. That’s how crazy wide the beam is.
I’ve had experience with generator setups going back decades, and until the advent of high powered LED emitters (& the IQ optics- how the light is managed is critically important), I always had to supplement the onboard headlight with…something. No longer. For me, the only place this “really good low beam” falls short is on pitch-black off-road, where I would want a “high beam” supplement anyway.
Confident? I am *leading* a nighttime bike ride with this setup: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/papillons-dc-monuments-at-night-ride-redux-tickets-27247784858. Saturday Sept 17, 7:00pm rollout. Please join us!

Anyone else able to come out and volunteer? We could use one more for Saturday evening.
I’ll be on that shift, so that means free cargo bike rides!
Tim, I will be bringing my Papillon Cycles Coffee Ride to the Fair, probably arriving at 1-ish. I can then volunteer in the afternoon.

ParticipantI’ll be there. What time? Still TBD.

ParticipantWow. And I thought I dodged crazy conditions on the DC Bike Ride? I got royally sick overnight and couldn’t make the start of the Challenge ride. Guardian Angel works in strange strange ways.
Talked to Bless Gomes @ Papillon Cycles afterwards, who told me about the carnage I missed. A bone to pick: Seriously? Sending riders over an incomplete paving job on the Pike? From fresh pavement to just milled, which is diabolical on a narrow road tire, especially for an less-than-skilled rider? Fast downhill to boot? Even with my plan of not worrying about time on the first lap and staying out of trouble…
Glad everyone is recovering….

ParticipantAh… *which* Italian store location? I couldn’t ride this event since I had to pick up Sue from work, did so, and drove in from there. We flipped a coin (no, actually more of a rational guess) and went to Westover. got there at 7:50pm, and noticed a conspicuous lack of the crew I passed by at Clarendon earlier. No loss… your friendly PAL Ambassador Annmarie was next door at Westover Beer Garden for her Mom’s band gig, and we said hi. She says “hi” too. And we ate well anyway…

ParticipantSaturday, March 26. The first Papillon Cycles shop ride of the season. I suppose it was a shade early, with moderately short notice, Easter weekend, and competing cherry blossoms. So store manager John Harpold and I improvised, and went across the river.

The Tidal Basin was totally jammed, as expected, but Hains Point offered blossoms and unimpeded riding. Afterwards, a trip to the Fish Market @ The Wharf. John picked up oysters, and transported them and 15 lbs of ice in his backpack all the way home, JUST like the bike messenger he was. I will have to disappoint some fans- Yuki did not join us for the ride.
Please add this to your local shop ride database: Papillon Cycles, Arlington, will be doing Saturday morning rides all season, generally alternating between casual coffee rides, and the Arlington Loop, with surprises thrown in along the way. These rides aimed more at the casual rider- NO DROP. Coffee Shop Ride next Saturday. Be there. Aloha.
