    Crystal City Crosshairs Garage Races
    3 hrs ·
Attention garage racers and friends: Tomorrow’s Crystal City races are postponed. We are operating with an abundance of caution after an employee of a tenant in the 201 12th St. S. complex was quarantined because of COVID-19. The complex common areas were cleaned and disinfected, today, but we are holding off before racing again.

You *know* some a**h*** will try to blame the cyclists for this.

    Horrible.

I went looking for this poll last night on the paper’s site. Couldn’t find it.

Best of fortune tonight at the Council meeting. I’ll be with you in spirit, as we will be at the Columbia Pike/ANC road project presentation, also this evening.

Thanks to everyone who sent an e-mail. The bill was killed in committee yesterday afternoon by a 13-2 vote.

If it’s anything like ending contributory negligee in DC, it’s going to be a long effort.

[Sigh] We pick ourselves off the deck and keep working.

DC peeps- What combo of “magic words” and focused lobbying effort got DC’s Bill through?

Hey Boomer, love it, except… too many hills too early for me. I must pass (Besides, I must feed my wife and make my cat her coffee). But interested in whatever ride you do next!

The rent had to have been ferocious. I used to patronize them at their old location. The wrenches were great about helping me get small parts that other bike shops couldn’t be bothered with, like master links/pins.

I’m sure rent was a factor, but a bigger factor for the hardware store side was parking. Most of the parking barons in downtown DC charge $21 a day for garage parking, but the Wharf garage charges up to $45 for special events (say, at The Anthem), for very limited capacity. Or you park at L’Enfant Plaza and take the shuttle. For local residents who needed things that required their vehicle to transport, that was a problem.

They did say that the Café made it possible to hang in longer than they might have otherwise. That’s a business model option for small independent bike shops who are trying to survive in a changing retail landscape.

That north turning to west side of the trail over Washington Blvd. is something I *rarely* ride- I don’t feel safe doing do. From the driver’s view on Rt. 50, I will tell you why (this is where my motorsports background kicks in). Approaching that overpass on 50, there is first the merge from Washington to go west- sightlines for the driver on 50 are good, but driver is approaching at 45 mph (at least). The driver in that ramp has NO merge space, and has to turn his/her head all the way around to see around *their* blind spot, and frequently has to floor it to merge safely. And WE in the bike path on the bridge have to cross at that point, with the driver on-ramp having their head turned the opposite way.

Then just over the bridge is the off-ramp to go south on Washington. For that ramp, you have to turn in and brake heavily (and downshift) just as the road falls away from you. All of which conspires against grip. And said driver will not see us in the crosswalk until *after* they turn in.

I missed the comment period (sorry) but the bottom line on this is that this full freeway interchange is hazardous for all parties, and needs fixin’. I know better than to lead a bike ride through here, and would much prefer to deal with the hills on Fillmore and the North Pershing & Washington intersection.

Chris, it may indeed require amputating freeway ramps, as you’ve shown.

Today’s Coffeeneuring trip was a mission to ride and document the freshly finished south side of Memorial Bridge. The wait was worth it in that we get the safer south side trail connections back.

The only thing that tells you that you’re crossing the former artfully disguised drawspan is that the original metal railing and facing is maintained and restored. A smooth trip by bike.

If it is DIY, it is very well done. It was on two corners of this intersection. I had not noticed this anywhere else downtown, but then I wasn’t looking. DC peeps, what say you?
