A velodrome in Montgomery County would be wonderful. Do we have a Tony Eberhardt, like at the former New England Velodrome, to pour heart and soul into it? http://www.cxmagazine.com/eberhardt-interview-new-england-velodrome-cyclocross-racing

(They finally lost the lease for good in 2013 to go-karts, after cleaning up piles and piles of mosquito-filled tires, spending five years building infrastructure and a huge following of cyclists for holding events, and making everything nice out there.)

I guess we would actually need to win an Olympics to have a permanent velodrome. Maybe Boston will finally get theirs in 2024. Boy, would it be awesome to have a local track.

I guess no one is posting because it’s pretty much fine. (25 mm slicks) No ice, just wet pavement on all asphalt, even untreated. Maybe 1″ of snow on the Anacostia bridge sidewalk and on Sligo Creek (north of the beltway, near Dennis, Silver Spring) in a few places, but it mashes down into mush. Just a few photos of the absolute worst spots I could find. But it’s a very pretty evening with the snow on the tree branches.

AM report. All sweetness and light! Beautiful dusting of snow! A cruise past parking lots formerly known as New Hampshire Ave, University Ave, and Colesville Rd.!

PM report. Depressing icy preview of the next three months. We can see that Montgomery County doesn’t give a crap about anyone but car drivers in its promised “White Oak development” in Silver Spring near the new FDA complex. Here’s the sidewalk on the northbound side of Colesville Rd/Route 29, which is the only bridge path for peds/bikes over the Anacostia North Branch that does not involve three lanes of traffic. In addition to being ignored and covered in plow snow by the MoCo park people, this path also got no love all day from the Trader Joes or the BP gas station and there’s an icy waterfall coming down the Burnt Mills Auto Body driveway that’s already barely navigable on foot. So two photos of the sidewalk:

And one sideways photo of the forlorn bus stop also on that sidewalk bridge over Route 29.

And one photo of Sligo Creek Trail, which has not been taken care of and is already icy (Silver Spring, outside the Beltway, just north of Dennis Ave.):

Here’s more on the cyclist killed in Gaithersburg, now reportedly because of a WSSC truck making a left turn. Seems like he worked in DC (Director at the National Center for Education Statistics?). Was he commuting to work?

MCMedia report has video, pictures of his bike and the scene, and his name.

So then we return to handicaps. And I guess one thing we can do is simply use Grumpy Cat to stare people down and say “Dont Sandbag – I will be checking your strava numbers – if you Sandbag, I will put you on Steve O’s team

And you REALLY do not want to be on Steve O’s team, speaking from experience. It is not fun.

What’s the link? Are we talking about the Diane Rehm show from 10/30/14 (Sharing The Road: Adapting To A New Culture Of Cycling)?

With an electric motor that hits 45 km/hr, it’s hard to believe you won’t just be cruising straight down Georgia Ave to 16th St. But for regular bike commuting from Aspen Hill/Wheaton, the last suggestion in Randyp’s post is super. To get to Grandview, cross under Connecticut Ave on the Matthew Henson trail, cross Randolph at the light on Dalewood Dr., and wind through the neighborhoods (…Henderson Ave) to Grandview. Good luck — I hope you find a nice route.

Wow, the Matthew Henson Trail is still astonishingly bad this morning on basically the whole length. There’s a good bit of snow layered on rutted ice. Still too soon for road bikes!

I can’t get to the form. FDA does offer the subsidy.

Rock Creek Trail between Randolph Rd. and Veirs Mill in Montgomery County is clear of leaves, ice-free, and beautiful, even in the shade and on bridges. The Matthew Henson Trail from the Connecticut Ave. underpass to Veirs Mill, also in Mo. Co., is icy, snowy, and ugly for skinny tires (on the 4 wood bridges). Making things worse, the entrance to the Connecticut Ave underpass is torn up for construction and not marked very well–a surprise in the dark).
