I just wanted to take a moment to say that I know there were a lot of late night phone calls, meetings, conference calls, in-person trips to Richmond, talking to staff, and other communications happening regarding all of this. There have been so many moving parts, last minute changes and surprises. Through all of this, we have to remember, for many of the folks involved they are volunteering their time on top of their full-time jobs, family and other committments to help try to push things forward for the cycling community.

    That said…

I want to give a hearty THANK YOU to everyone involved in these efforts during this VA legislative season. While not everything went completely in favor of cyclists, we do appreciate everything you do! Thank you!

I second the big thank you for everyone involved. My biggest frustration is with State Senator (former Arlington County Board Member) Barbara Favola for apparently not reaching out to the cycling community before introducing her bill.

i’ve reached out to President, Fairfax Advocates for Better Bicycling (FABB)/Bruce Wright and Susan Stillman who is a FABB member and (I think) cycle rep in Vienna. No word yet but i’ll ask at FABB mtg on wed, 20 feb, 1930 at Patrick Henry Library in Vienna.

    Great, thank you very much.

No it’s not, I’ve been by there a couple of times today — oh, you mean “North” Old Glebe Road and “North” Glebe Road. There is an intersection of (South) Old Glebe Road and (South) Glebe Road in south Arlington, too. It’s a good thing you mentioned Military Road.

Sorry about the confusion. Only in Arlington do you have two intersections of Glebe Road and Old Glebe Road. Keep Arlington (a little) Weird!

To the guy who said “work on your cadence” as he passed me, I was mystified until I got home and googled it. All these years of commuting and I never knew “cadence” was a thing! While my poor cadence is apparently obvious to my fellow trail users, i have no idea how to work on it though. Do I pedal faster or slower, or just more consistently? And more importantly, why? By the way, now that I’ve read all about “drafting” on here, maybe I’ll stop pedaling altogether and just get someone to draft me all the way home.

If the guy was riding what appears to be a new Cannondale road bike with green trim, he said the same thing to me a few weeks ago. I completely agree with having the right cadence, but telling someone riding a bike that weighs 50 lbs. counting the panniers to work on their cadence while you scoot by on your 17 lbs. road bike is a little snarky.

Please see my update above, correcting earlier misinformation about SB1060. (Can we do strike-through, here? I’d have preferred to do that over simply deleting the old stuff, but I didn’t want to leave any room for misunderstanding.)

If it is now the case that SB1060 will be used by law enforcement as an excuse to ticket cyclists drafting, then I do not see why it should get any support from the cycling community.

I noticed that there was a lot of sirens, heliocopters, police boats (including FBI), cops, etc all over the Potomac River area last night around 6:30 pm. There were still some remnants around 9:45 last night too. Something was up but I figured it was some sort of training exercise. Might explain why there were Feds at the accident cited above. Hope the biker is ok!

My guess is that the activity was related to security for the State of the Union.

Great, the anti-dooring law does not get passed and prospects for the 3 foot/following too closely bill do not look great, but Favola’s cycling harassment bill goes through. How does she defend sponsoring this ill considered legislation?

    And then there was one!

Just rode through the Jefferson area and there was but one (yes one!) cone.

    The little sign was interesting.

Thank you very much for your work on this. It is nice not having to weave around or adjust the cones.

I also got the same message, as did a number of others I tried to get to weigh in.

Saw ConsularRider peel off the W&OD for 4MRT, thought that was the last I’d see of him, and then he passed me on the 4MRT after Shirlington.

Sorry to be a Gloomy Gus, but isn’t this one of the rides where the Loudoun County sheriff harasses cyclists?

DismalScientist passed me this morning at 15th and Independence as I casually rode to the always red light light at Jefferson and 14th.

Me: Riding my fully loaded Surly home on the W&OD and not feeling the greatest because of a cold and I forgot my water bottle on the warmest day in months.

You: Riding what appeared to be a recent model Cannondale with green trim. You told me to work on my cadence as you sped by.

Me: Wondering what was meant by your comment. Too slow? Not smooth enough? Concluding that I am too tired to care, but a little more detail would have been helpful.

Well, nothing’s done until it’s done, but I think that it’s worth putting some effort into supporting both SB1060 (following too closely + 3 foot passing) and SB736 (dooring) when they get to the House.

(Also, if you’re a constituent of Sen. Favola’s, I’d put a reminder on my calendar to let her know how disappointed I was in her patroning a bill that will do nothing more than introduce confusion and enable harassment.)

Perhaps if the bill is referred to as the “Favola Cyclist Harassment Bill” it would get some attention.
