I’m sure you have wronged me at some point.

The failure to buy someone a beer to begin with is itself a wrong, so that’s two beers.

It means, quite simply, that cars are required to yield, but pedestrians are not supposed to create a situation in which the car cannot possibly yield in time to prevent an collision. It does prevent a pedestrian from leaving the curb if there is plenty of time for the motorist to avoid a collision by slowing down or stopping, regardless of whether that inconveniences the motorist.

But, for some reason, some people keep quoting the part about disregard, creating a straw man about jumping in front of cars, and using that whole artificial structure to claim that the pedestrian right of way in a crosswalk does not exist. That confuses and astounds me.

I don’t think anyone is arguing that pedestrian right of way does not exist IN a crosswalk. I think they are saying pedestrians don’t have right of way before they are in the crosswalk, which is consistent with the sign.

The snowmaggedens were late 2009 and early 2010. There was snow in winter 2010-2011, just no “maggedons”. Last winter (2011-2012) was blistfully (almost) snow-free.

The 12-hour traffic jam snow was in early 2011, so we actually had two winters in a row with Snowmaggedons.

I’m curious to see how it turns out. How old is this wheel, by the way?

It’s the original wheel, so 12-13 years old with about 2,000 miles this year just a couple hundred miles the preceding six years, and no idea of the miles for its first six years (bought it used). That’s why I’m not too worried if I have to buy another.

I’ve heard of people with only one bike! I am perplexed by them like a cat watching a human take a shower. More bikes is good, like elevenses and second-breakfast. :)

I have a vintage road frame that I’m hoping to build up over the winter, so hopefully I’ll have a bigger fleet next year.

Have they recently repaved the street? I remember Slaters being pretty bad for potholes and bumps.

All-around suckage. If REI couldn’t get the freewheel off in the way you describe, I wonder if they weren’t doing it wrong. Go somewhere else for a second effort/second opinion before buying a new wheel+cassette…that’s just wrong. If you have some penetrating oil (I LOVE B’laster) maybe see if you can spray some into the lockring and let it sit overnight.

You don’t have any other skewers lying around, or on another bike?

Yeah, I’ll get a second opinion.

No, I just have one bike and haven’t built up my spare parts yet.

Has there been any updates from folks on routes from Annandale to Old Town Alexandria? I live right off of the Cross County Trail and work off of Duke Street near King Street Metro. I would prefer to bike to work. I cannot seem to be able to find a safe and relatively direct route. I am an experienced rider and even sections of LRT makes me nervous. I was thinking of trying to take the CCT to Holmes Run to Eisenhower. Is this possible? Thanks!

The CCT doesn’t connect to Holmes Run. You could take Annandale Rd to Holmes Run to Eisenhower. Or you could take a combination of LRT and Alpine Dr to Chambliss to pick up Holmes Run.

Did the agents stop you, or did you seek them out so you could discuss it?

My ride was so nice this morning that I decided to use the TR bridge instead and I avoided the whole mess. It only added a mile to my ride, though.

Ha! For once, I didn’t overdo it on the road or on the dinner plate this weekend, so it was one of my strongest Mondays in a while. Plus Laurie’s been fiddling with my pedal/cleat interface, and my legs feel better positioned than ever — getting more power and comfort, and less stiffness after the ride. Not to rub it in, but the weather’s awesome… :)

It was easy to be car-free all weekend — I just didn’t go anywhere except on two short fun rides.

No happy hour, again. No coffee club, again. My life and I are both lame.
