ParticipantSo this guy just followed you around all morning with a camera? Was he waiting for you when you left the house?

ParticipantPalisades to Carolina Brothers and back is about 65 miles. It should be pretty easy to find 15 more. My house to Carolina Brothers and back is 56 miles. I need a circuitous route.

ParticipantI tried to give a man and his son some blinkies tonight on the MVT. He declined b/c he had a light (which I couldn’t see) and his son had a reflector.

THAT’S IT?!!!! WTF
It took me like 20 minutes to type all that up with the mapped out links and you’re not going to tell me how to do it faster?!
what are we paying you for?!
I’m pretty sure Tim’s advice on doing it faster is going to involve an aero helmet, TT bars, insanely long legs, and rule #5.

I live right at the intersection of 495 and Rockville Pike (under the bridge, don’t hate) and I work right next to 50. I have no ‘neighborhood’ time to speak of LOL

This. People should be able to go out and easily buy a nice-looking commuter bike that ALREADY HAS fenders, lights, basket, chain guard, etc, and it shouldn’t cost $1500.
Which if you’re in Europe, you can do.
Sadly, we are not there.
WOE.
Sometimes we pine for that which is right under our nose.

I actually did this the other day. I shouted, in a kindly, paternal manner mind you, that “I can’t see you for s#$t.” That was after almost plowing into the black coat wearing dude riding on the darkest portion of the W&OD in Falls Church. Paternal.
My dad actually talks this way, interspersed with early ’70s idioms like bitchin’.

Rule #5 applies to kids as well.
I’m always telling my six-year-old to cowgirl-up, with varying results.

ParticipantSince early July when I started using Strava, I’ve had 190 rides for 1700 miles. Before that I estimate I had 150 rides (75 or so commutes) for 1200 miles. So I should pass 3300 miles for the year. I’m hoping for 5000 next year. I’ve had five flats (all on the front), four broken spokes (all on the back), one new back wheel (on the way), and one broken grip shifter. I’ve saved about $2100 in commuting expenses, and spent about $200 on equipment and repairs. I’ve also lost about 20 pounds this year and am almost impervious to weather.

Still pregnant. This was my first commute since 2 weeks ago (damn you, child-born plagues!) and I’m hoping my last commute for a while. I really want this kid’s birth story to start “I biked to work on the day you were born”, so I’m hoping for some forum mojo to help me out.
Go to the Well Dressed Burrito for lunch. Get the spicy sauce. The first bite gives me hiccups. The second bite cures them.

There are supposed to be bike boxes at the front of every East Bound L-Street intersection to accommodate cyclists who need to get over ahead of time to turn right up the road.
.Yes, but the light was green and I was the only one stopping. What I’ve learned is that I need to plan ahead and get over the block before or merge into the left turn lane.

ParticipantNew situation for me: I use the L Street lane daily, but yesterday I went east of 18th for the first time. I wanted to link to the 15th street cycletrack to go southbound. When I got to 15th street, there were cars to the left of me turning left, I was in the green cycle lane, and there were cars to the right of me going straight. Our light was green. But I wanted to get into the 15th street track. Luckily there were no riders behind me (the lane is very narrow right there), so I just stopped and waited in the L Street lane until the light changed. But what’s the proper technique?
ShawnoftheDread
ParticipantIsn’t he asking for techniques to get them ON, not get them off?

I’m curious. How would you outfit your bike to bring home the bacon. I think Rod has leg up on the rest of us.
Am I the only one thinking about a cyclocross/bow-hunting biatholon?
ShawnoftheDread
ParticipantYes, no one parked or drove in the lane this morning with the new bollards installed. Not sure a recumbent trike could fit between the double bollards, so that would be my only complaint. Not that I’ve ever seen a recumbent trike downtown.
