ParticipantI have to nominate myself for the slacker team this year as I’ve been on the winning team for the past two competitions and I figure that I should defer the privilege of being an official team member to someone else.

ParticipantThe proposal for the crossing of Route 1 is a classic ‘get everyone out of the way of the cars’ tactic and doesn’t take into account how people behave. It’s pretty disappointing in that respect.

A road diet here would be nice. Of course, this is the only part of Van Dorn that is already very bikeable (25MPH speed limit and not much traffic), although sightlines aren’t great. Improvements are much more badly needed everywhere else on Van Dorn.
The apartment buildings nearer to where Van Dorn merges with Menokin need crosswalks and other treatments for them to be able to walk safely. IMO, that is a priority,

So basically they’re talking about the swamp to the right of the GWMP/left of Metro line? I presume their easement must go all the way down to 4MR, because if it’s just that little area behind the townhomes then there is no chance it’s 13.5 acres. When I used to live in those old garden style apartments next to it (off E Abingdon across from drycleaners), I just presumed that land was private with that little gravel path and small pond.
That’s a great trade then since nothing can ever be done to all of that land due to it’s status as basically all swamp.
The fact that it is a wetland does mean the land serves a purpose.

I saw an officer driving on Four Mile Run Trail near S. Lang St. and Mt. Vernon Ave. in a non-emergency situation, a couple years ago. He was rolling along slowly, no lights, so it wasn’t part of a hot pursuit. I noticed him because… I was riding on the trail at the time, only I was on a bike.
You can see the results of their driving on that section of trail in an earlier thread.

ParticipantI saw a police car on the HRT around the Beatley Bridge on one of the BPAC counting days. It happened to be a beautiful day when there were many people out enjoying the pleasant weather. Why the officer had to be driving their car on the trail on such a day, I couldn’t understand. There was no traffic chaos or any emergency to which they were responding.
When I brought this up to the APD via Call Click Connect, my concerns were rebuffed with a condescending tone.
Cars have no business being on the trail especially considering that the surface of the path is not designed to accommodate two ton vehicles and the damage from them is apparent.
The worst thing about all of this is that the police started driving on the trail and now, other city staff have taken such liberties. My wife has seen a backhoe on the trail. It was not heading to or from any visible construction. To me, it seemed like city staff wanted to take a shortcut in their heavy equipment. Not cool.

Obviously they need to give the dogs proper equipment.
I wouldn’t have any problem if they shot all of those geese.

I confess to an unseemly glee at splitting the lane in just that kind of situation, fully aware of the impotent outrage it causes.
I can only hope that it serves as inspiration…

ParticipantTo the courteous drivers on Braddock Road in Alexandria in rush hour: thanks for exhibiting patience and yielding to me as I changed lanes to prepare for a left turn onto Howard Street. It is encouraging to see some humanity out there on the roads. I hope to run into you again!

Jokes aside, and I did not measure my waist size at the beginning of January, all of my pants were… ehm… very tight around the waist. Now I have had to purchase new belts to keep them from falling off. Also I can now wear my “skinny boy” shirts without risking bodily harm to others from button launches. There is… loose fabric around my midriff. So something positive has happened…
I was about the same. My pants are looser now than they have been in years. Not having measured them, I don’t have any numbers to back up my conclusions however my parents and coworkers have remarked that I’ve lost some weight around the midriff so I’ll take it.

ParticipantI plan on doing a lap after work but that will be around 4:45pm and then I’ll head home. This will be my first and only lap around Hains for this year’s competition.

On Twitter, the Alexandria parks department promised repairs but didn’t respond to questions about moving the supplies or beefing up the trail: https://twitter.com/kidicalmassalx/status/559055555373699072
About two months ago, my wife was commuting to work using the Holmes Run Trail to get to the dirt path leading to Wheeler Ave through Tarleton Park. She happened to find a city staff member driving a backhoe along that dirt path. There was no construction going on anywhere along the trail that she could see so the only conclusion she could reach was that the person using the backhoe decided to take the ‘shortcut.’ We were appalled at this wanton disregard for city facilities on the part of staff.
To add to this, I regularly see tire tracks on the grassy areas of Tarleton Park and other parts of the Holmes Run Greenway.

ParticipantMe: Riding down North Pegram Street in Alexandria at about the speed limit of 25mph.
You: the young woman in the SUV who just couldn’t wait and passed me on the right in my lane.
Did you really need to pull that kind of move on a residential street with kids walking from school only to make a left turn into a driveway 200 metres later?
