Hello fellow teammates,
I’m Jake and I didn’t make it to the happy hour due to a deathly cold that I developed this week. Once I fully recover, I’ll be back in the saddle more often. My name preference is Zehn and the Art of Bicycle Riding.

scorchedearthParticipantI do not own a rubber chicken.
scorchedearthParticipantIn true slacker form, there was only one member who appeared at the happy hour and that was me. Plus, I didn’t ride a bike there so I think that I represented our team fairly.
scorchedearthParticipantWe rule.

Shoot. I forgot this is TRB. And there is a session I have to attend, from 4 to 6. So I will be at the convention center, in a suit, likely without a helmet, at 6PM on the day of Happy Hour. I still expect to get there, but I may not even manage to CaBi it, but will need to transit over instead.
You won’t be the only one wearing a suit so we can commiserate together.

scorchedearthParticipantI don’t wear a helmet so I’d prefer reflectors.
scorchedearthParticipantI’m sorry to hear that.

My only comment! “Merrland (a.k.a. the state where the drivers are bat-nuts)”
Um, after riding into Arlington last Wednesday night I would have to disagree:( that said, it’s always scarier on the other side of the river, whichever side that is…

People are terrible drivers no matter what their license plates say.
scorchedearthParticipantI will be nominating myself for the Slackers team this year as I have some goals to work towards at the end of the year and I need to remain focused on them. As such, I do not feel that I can contribute materially to a team like I have the past few years.
I’ll still come out to happy hours though!

What intersection is it? I ask because there are Alexandria BPAC members on the forum who could help (same goes for the other items that people have posted on this thread).
South Pickett and Duke.
I am a BPAC member, by the way.
scorchedearthParticipantI submitted the bane of my existence which happens to be an intersection near my apartment where I regularly am nearly run over by people driving who can’t be bothered to yield the right of way. I’ll continue to do so in order to draw attention to these issues. If anything happens, I’ll be sure to post an update.

There has been some mention in general terms of building core strength. Do any of you do specific strengthening exercises targeted towards cycling?
My routine in the weight room does not have cycling in mind. It consists of bench press (incline and flat), flies (incline and flat), various rows, lateral pulldowns, deadlifts, dumbbell and barbell curls, tricep extensions, dips, and pullups. My warmup and cooldown usually involve jumping rope or a quick jog on the treadmill.
For abs, I do a mix of straight leg situps, leg raises, bicycle crunches, planks, mountain climbers, and some others.
I find that the cross training benefits my road riding however the greatest difference I feel is when I get out on my mountain bike.

So, do core exercises and weight lifting to be able to ride a road bike?
That’s not the only reason. The benefits of lifting weights and doing core exercises extend far beyond the ability to ride one’s bike faster. Lifting weights maintains muscle and considering that cycling doesn’t give you much of an upper body workout, it is useful for overall strength and better looks. Core exercises are useful for overall strength however I am also convinced that keeping a strong core will help mitigate any back issues that can arise from our desk jobs.
