It only took two days of riding in the sun for my tan lines to resurface. I need some arm covers for the season.

I’m Jake. My moniker comes from my DJ moniker back in my raving/clubbing heyday. I rediscovered cycling about two years ago after having trained muaythai for five and realizing that my knees were no longer the same as they were when I was 20. I am a twice weekly bike commuter and a general cyclist going on and off road. Also, I have recently become active in bicycle and pedestrian advocacy in the city of Alexandria hoping to make life better for those who prefer not to use a motor to get everywhere.

    See you guys around. :D

When getting on the 29K and seeing an empty rack on the bus, the bus drivers have usually recommended that I mount my bike on the innermost rack because that is the safest spot in case the bus gets cut off by an overzealous cager.

My commute is 20 miles one way so I usually go multimodal. I take the bike on the bus in the morning and get dropped off right around the corner from my office. I take the quick spin to work, store my bike indoors safely and then look forward to the ride home. The ride home usually takes me about 70-90 minutes depending on lights and how fast I feel like going. Last year, I began bike commuting by going once or twice a week. This year, I intend to consistently ride twice a week and perhaps even half time.

1up make some great hitch racks. They also happen to be manufactured in the US.

Wow that’s like a 20 mile commute (one way) via W&OD!

That is the exact number. I usually go multimodal. I take the 29K bus into the office and ride home. It still beats driving everyday.

I’m interested in hearing how you would use it for commuting to Fairfax. I’ve used the southern crossing a few times to go between Shirlington and Little River Turnpike, but not sure how I’d use Holmes Run to go further west (unless going all the way north to Falls Church).

I figure if I can get to Lake Barcroft easily, through the quieter streets in those neighborhoods and toward the CCT, it may be feasible. I haven’t scoped out a route just yet though so it is speculation on my part.

As it stands now, my commute takes me north from old town Fairfax to the WOD and back south to Landmark. It’s doable but a shorter route would be nice.

You’ve undoubtedly seen the construction equipment at the one end of Dora Kelley Park on your rides.

I’ve ridden up and down all of the Holmes Run trail from Alexandria to Columbia Pike a bunch of times. The northern part is surprisingly quiet for such an urban area and is a nice escape. Once they complete the Chambliss crossing, I may have another option for commuting from Fairfax.

Construction has begun on the crossing. The equipment is all staged at Dora Kelly and work is progressing. I’d guess it should be done by the summer.
