I totally saw that guy studying his map yesterday. I was about to ask him if he needed help but was distracted by an errant car. I’m glad I didn’t! :)

I hope you stayed good and lost long enough to erase whatever PR you seemed to be going for.

Yeah, totally get that. Thanks for elaborating, I suppose folks switch over to 650b wheel size (that might be the actually same size as 26″) for the reason of strength of the wheel as well – that and rolling resistance and speed.

Sorry to hear of your stolen Surly, I had a bike stolen a couple years ago and you don’t ever get over it, at least I haven’t. I’m always on the lookout.

Cyclingfool – I’m asking this just for pure education but why would you choose a 26” rather than a 700c? Curious, I have 700c now…really, just asking because I am curious. :)

It’s too bad the 26″ wheel version is only available up to a 53 cm frame size, otherwise I’d consider it as an alternative to the LHT when/if I decide to ditch my mid-90s touring/commuter-ized MTB frame in favor of a modern touring frame. with 26×2″ tires as they built that one up, it’s very similar that what I have done with my current build (26×1.85″ tires and intentions to go with 2″ Schwalbes when new tires are needed).

For what it’s worth – here’s what they said when asked about the frame size question – “The big tires and higher BB mean that we needed to use smaller wheels on the smaller sizes.”

Anybody that knows me knows that I love Velo Orange. See their new frame here…off-road touring frame. You don’t have to deal with the west coast to get one (Rivendell)!

Was out later on in the morning with the fam. Can definitely confirm mouse carnage. Caterpillars too.

Good ideas, Nutcase helmets seem great now that I think about it. Thanks for that suggestion. There’s a balance though of getting my 14 mo old to wear a helmet. I can’t explain to him why he needs it and the trailer acting as protection holds me off from forcing the issue. As soon as he knows why I can force it which might be soon.

We can get him to go to sleep by himself, to clean up his books, etc but there something different about wearing a helmet.

Will pay close attn to the neck angle next ride which probably will be tomorrow’s beautiful morning

Just to add my humble thoughts..I was looking at a dyno hub this year but decided no to it for reasons of:

    1) I can mount a light using my front rando rack using the Paul Component Gino mount
    2) I have one bike and wanted to flexibility of not dealing with a dyno hub for all my rides
    3) The B&M Ixon IQ rechargeable battery light is proving to be at least for now a great light with a very wide beam. You don’t take the batteries out, just plug a DC cord into the base of the light. Based on some of Peter Whites pics of some generator lights they were quite thin of a beam IMO although some were very good.
    4) The setup I have with a battery light I decided on is the same as it would be on any classic randonneur bicycle – low to the ground lighting with cutoff not to blind folks ahead of you

Everyone is different, just comes down to your unique needs. For me, it was flexibility with a little bit of budget reasons too. I can take my “heavy” front light off anytime I want eg. summer months. From my research and let me know if I’m wrong but, w/o purchasing a SON or the like and forking up the money for it, you’re going to eventually wear out a Shimano.

BUT, you could always have a dyno hub front wheel built with a Shimano and then another wheel with no hub for the summer months as well to get around the wear issue in the summer long days.

    :)

@dasgeh – wondering your opinion – the wife just started pulling a trailer down the WOD only between Vienna and Hunter Mill Rd, to work (she’s a nanny). does our 14 mo old need a helmet? I see toddlers that have them and some that don’t. I err on the side they don’t but that’s my opinion and maybe misguided one at that. He’s just so happy in it w/o one…

On the article – agreed with her up until the mention of the box crate – being the rando aficionado that I am I err on the side of having weight low always for safer handling
