ParticipantLast time I did this ride I wanted to just stay at the rest stops and stuff my piehole. Great ride. Well organized.

ParticipantThey tend to be pretty good about fixing things promptly on the MVT south of DC

ParticipantNow, if bikes get stolen their regularly, you’d think Metro would set up a security camera (at least). I suppose Metro has bigger problems. I mean after all they don’t really need to boost confidence in their system anymore.

ParticipantI ride the sidewalk, so technically not salmoning. It’s legal (I checked). I go slowly. in four years only one pedestrian complained. She was having a bad day, I think.

ParticipantSomehow, someway I managed to stumble upon the right combination of clicks and holding buttons down to get the ODO input screen to appear. On to 17,000!

ParticipantLast night the bike valet was overflowing with bikes so you might want to get there a little earler than usual. An hour before game time is plenty.

ParticipantI’ll be there.

ParticipantYou may note that the ride had very few churches on it. Heading into the city would have created a mess with church goers on a Sunday morning.

ParticipantI saw only one rider do something dangerous, on the u-turn at Key Bridge. Not the place to do a fast, close pass, I’m afraid. Only other rider of concern was the guy swaying back and forth for miles on end. There was a rider near him who told me “I’ve got my eye on him” just in case he got any more rambuncious. Most people don’t understand that holding your line is important in a group line like this. The DC Bike Riders did an infinitely better job of riding safely than the 5 Boro Riders in NYC on May 1.
Also, I got hit with a lot more rear tire spray in NYC as a result of exhuberant yoots.

ParticipantThey are protecting a gosling that you may not have seen because of the tall grass. I’ve seen geese do this a lot. They never make contact with people. No worries. Give them a wide berth.

ParticipantThe trail gets busy before and after work on weekdays. It is bumpy and curvy and not great but it will do for your purposes. The good news is the trail takes you right to the zoo. You can’t miss it.

ParticipantI live in Fort Hunt and have been bike commuting for many years. There is now an alternate route to the MVT for snow days. It is not great but I used it a couple of times this winter on my commute to Rosslyn. For housing prices, all else equal, the closer you are to US 1 the lower the price. The best elementary schools are Stratford Landing and Waynewood. Waynewood, both the school and the neighborhood, lack diversity. My neighborhood is Williamsburg Manor North.
I have done the drive to Dyke Marsh option when I was pressed for time. It works well.
These are sleepy suburbs. You have to go several miles to get to any restaurants. The closest movie theaters are 5-6 miles away. US 1 has many services but they are nearly all chain stores. I avoid it like the plague.
All that said, I have an absolutely wonderful bike commute along the Potomac, 15 miles to/from Rosslyn. I used to work at L’Enfant. Same distance.
Good luck.
