ParticipantIt was indeed just before 8 am. No idea if the victim was transported but my boss who called 911 said he was facedown and not moving.

ParticipantI think this is a great idea. I also like the idea of having a competition among schools (high schools and college) to some up with some sort of solution to this problem. Seems like somebody could make a decent $$$ if they can solve this problem.

ParticipantI rode Union St in Old Town this morning. A Mercedes pulled out of a garage in front of me without looking (or yielding). A sports car driver accelerated aggressively while rolling every stop sign. A beer truck blocked the entire road for a couple of minutes. No police present.
This evening. A car was parked perpendicular to the curb on N. Union blocking part of the bike lane and the side walk. Cars rolled through stop signs at both Queen and Cameron. At King I finally spotted the police officer. He was standing with his back to the intersection chatting with a Starbucks customer.
Such enforcement excitement!

ParticipantIt was pretty nice out there yesterday. WABA has a winner with this ride for sure.

ParticipantSome links to the ride including a gnome picture at the start on my Flickr page.

ParticipantGood thing I am having a colonoscopy next week.

ParticipantMy rear tube blew out on the way to work on the MVT this morning. At least a dozen cyclists offered to help me including @consularrider. Alas, my tire was kaput. Thanks to everyone for their concern. https://rootchopper.wordpress.com/2016/09/30/tgif-boom-or-the-tao-of-bike-commuting/

ParticipantMount Vernon Trail flooded between Belle View Boulevard and the Dyke Marsh boardwalk. Also, Union and King in Old Town had rising water at 8 am. All ridable if you don’t care about dry feet and chain life.

ParticipantTake Maine Ave to M Street. M to 11th. Right on 11th Street bike lane over Anacostia River. Right on Good Hope at traffic light. ART is along the river at the T. Take a right and ride all the way to Bladensburg.
Once you cross the river in Bladensburg you can take a left and head toward Mt Rainier or a right. Right takes you upriver where you will see a split for the Northwest and Northeast Branch Trails. NW goes to College Park (and beyond). NE goes to Hyattsville (and beyond).
I find the old trails up near Bladensburg confusing but I ride them very infrequently. I suggest getting yourself a WABA DC bike map. Words and pix from yesterday’s meander at the links below. (I rode to the trail via the Woodrow Wilson Bridge. Not recommended unless you are a billy goat.)

ParticipantI think the wavy sections are a traffic calming idea. There are some islands on the approaches to a bridge that require riders to slow down. (I rode it today too.) It’s nearly done. They could have made it better but I don’t see how. It’s a gem.

Participant“Equally?” Thanks. I needed a laugh this morning.
In the past I have been pulled over for rolling through a stop sign at 3 miles per hour (I was clipped in) and given a 5 minute lecture by an APD officer. It was at Union and King at a time when no one else was within 20 feet of the intersection. The APD officer’s rant was totally obnoxious and unnecessary. Expect the same.

ParticipantI agree about the drivers. They were very careful and I did not have a single bad experience with them. It has to be frustrating to drive through an event like that so hats off to the drivers around Shepherdstown. I also did not encounter overly aggressive pace lines of riders which was an issue at Indian Head and past Backroads events.

ParticipantI thought the course was a vast improvement over being harassed by Barney Fife in Berryville. https://rootchopper.wordpress.com/2016/09/18/backroads-more-better-since-2015/
The crash victim lucked out. A friend of mine was right behind him. My friend stopped and found a doctor in the field two riders back. The victim had first aid within a minute of crashing. Don’t have any idea about the severity of his injuries though.Rootchopper
ParticipantIt was kinda over there when it should be over here. Had to wear a splint and it fell back into place after the swelling went down.

ParticipantThat was brutal. I finished but it nearly finished me. It was about the same level of difficulty as 2007 which was held in an August heat wave.

I overshot 3 turns, had to improvise a detour in SW, and became totally frustrated by not being able to find Tenley Circle which I have been through 100 times. (It was just over the hill I was climbing on Wisconsin.) I didn’t miss a single state though. I was one hurtin’ unit at the Tacoma rest stop. They had ice and a sprinkler. Saved my butt.
