ParticipantI should mention that there are many, many improvements to the roads in Fort Belvoir, including bike lanes and sharrows and such.

ParticipantNo can do. The base roads do not go through to Old Colchester. Of course, if you are not afraid of dying, you could ride US 1 from Backick to Old Colchester. I did this once. Won’t do it again.

ParticipantI should have said Backlick Road not Braddock. It’s a remnant from before the FFX Parkway was built on top of the old Backlick Road.

ParticipantFort Belvoir was closed to civilians without business on the base for several years after 9-11 but now it’s back to id checks. (They scan the barcode on the back of your driver’s license, btw.) It’s actually a pretty nice place to ride. To exit on the south side you have a choice of two gates. The Braddock Road exit has a long traffic light. Or you can cross US 1 on a bridge within the base and take a left on Kingman. Kingman intersects with the FFX County Parkway.

ParticipantI am not sure what area you are having trouble with. You can take the Mt. Vernon Highway to Fort Belvoir. Show the guard an driver’s license and you can ride across the base to US 1 at Braddock Road. Take Braddock to the FFX County Parkway. This has a side path or you can use the huge paved shoulder. Exit at Telegraph Road. Left on Telegraph which becomes Old Colchester Road at US 1. Follow Old Colchester to US 1 again at the Occoquan River.
After that its car hell

ParticipantMVT from Old Town to DC is no problem this morning. There’s one sad little pile of snow under the 14th Street railroad bridge.
I’m looking forward to tonight’s tail wind!!!!

ParticipantMy tweet was for this morning’s conditions. The NWS just revised its forecast for the evening. Temps are expected to be in the 30s, not the 40s. Bridges will be slick especially in low lying areas and outside the heat island of the cities (e.g. south of Old Town on the MVT). Keep in mind that the roadways will be treated but the trails will not.
It’s not just a bike commute; it’s an adventure.

ParticipantDang, that was fun. I had ice on my brakes front and rear and a buildup of slush on top of my handlebar bag. The snow was mixed with sleet and the wind off the river sprayed my face with stinging bb’s for about 20 minutes. I could feel my bike sliding every so often but it stayed upright. I stood to climb up the steep bit on the hill to Rosslyn and my rear wheel started to go sideways. I sat down and it stopped. I topped it off watching a car make a right turn on red without stopping from the I66 ramp. If I had followed the traffic light I’d be typing this from the ER.
My feet are frozen. I tried putting my feet in plastic bags to keep them wet but this caused my feet to sweat and learned that cold sweat feels surprisingly similar to cold rain and snow.
Other than that it was just another ride on the MVT.

ParticipantEven before this whacky event has occurred it has raised $1,000 for WABA. Congratulations to Megabeth for coming up with this. Good luck tomorrow. May the winds die down and the day be merry and bright.

ParticipantUsed Big Nellie’s fairing to tack all the way home last night. Felt like a yacht.

ParticipantMaybe one step would be for the League of American Bicyclists to remove its Bicycle Friendly Community for those cities that refuse to plow trails, biek lanes, cycletracks in a timely manner.
