I hear that comment quite often! It’s not your jewels you should watch out for, but your knees instead. The spike is not any less blunt than your top tube or stem, but it sticks out to the side when turning, so you can catch it while pedaling if you’re not careful.

Are those bar-end mirrors in the pics? Do they work well?
They seem to (better than the glasses-mount mirror I tried). Nothing beats a good pair of ears and a look over the shoulder, but the mirrors work well to keep track of things that are moving at a similar speed (cars waiting to pass, other riders on a group ride, etc). They fit tightly in my bars – I almost gave up trying to install them before I remembered the golden rule of bicycle maintenance: grease makes everything better.

Do we need to #NoBAFS runs? I’m guessing not but just wanted to make sure
This just in: No, you don’t need to mark runs! People still need to mark indoor trainer rides as “#NoBAFS”, but running, snowshoeing and the likes don’t need it.
I sent a feature request to Strava, and they responded today:
Product Team, Jan 07 02:27 pm (PST):
Ron,I love the dialog about the challenge on the bike arlington board! What you guys are doing is fantastic.
The current API is pretty limited. We are getting ready to release an updated API within the next two months that supports all the activity types. I think you can be confident that using the /api/v2/rides end-point that you will ONLY get rides and not any other activity type. For example http://app.strava.com/activities/35240379 is a showshoe outing, but http://app.strava.com/api/v2/rides/35240379 returns an error.
You can sign up for notification about the forthcoming API at http://app.strava.com/developers

Sadly, yes. Strava doesn’t give me a way to differentiate runs from rides. I couldn’t even do it on speed – a lot of CaBi rides are slower than speedy joggers!

ParticipantI’m down to using Strava and Golden Cheetah (the 3.0 development builds). Golden Cheetah lets me own my data locally, instead of relying on someone else’s website. It also has decent analysis tools (and it’s free).

I don’t wish to add to the work level of rcannon or Ron but it would be kinda cool if there were a mileage total on the leaderboard. If it is easy to program, might this be done?
Done! It now displays group mileage, and down at the bottom it has a spot for total miles and rides.

Hi group – I think I must have messed something up when I tried to sign up for Freezing Saddles a couple weeks ago. (I’m listed on the contest results page with the right Strava account: Joe Birkenstock, http://app.strava.com/athletes/1154396, but I’m not assigned to a team.)
Go ahead and sign up: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/viewform?formkey=dFBxZUdnZEZuZ2NNbndBc0hhUTZGTlE6MQ
rcannon is making the late assignments this weekend.January 4, 2013 at 2:14 am in reply to: Freezing Saddles: Winter Bike Challenge (sign up open) #958930ronwalf

Sorry – we set the rules, he’s just playing us
We have not, however, set the the prize table. I suggest a `special` first prize: For every southern hemispheric point used to win the competition, said rider gets one ice cube in the chamois.January 3, 2013 at 5:52 pm in reply to: Freezing Saddles: Winter Bike Challenge (sign up open) #958851ronwalf

How often does it update?
Every 15 minutes or so (every once and a while it’ll miss an update).
It’s current saying: Jason Kyzer: 37 points (2 days, 17 miles)
That looks right to me?January 3, 2013 at 3:15 am in reply to: Freezing Saddles: Winter Bike Challenge (sign up open) #958790ronwalf

Ron: I assume if these people have shown up, they would show up on the scoreboard.
Yes, they show up about 15 minutes after they join their team.
For everyone:
I changed the scoreboard so that it ignores any activity with “#NoBAFS” in the title, so please stick that in the name of any activity which isn’t an outdoor bike ride. The scoreboard has instructions on this, in case you forget.January 3, 2013 at 2:34 am in reply to: Freezing Saddles: Winter Bike Challenge (sign up open) #958784ronwalf

But it also looks like if you were to do two rides in a single day, say 4.9mi and 1.1mi
Yes, this is correct. I keep track of days ridden and total miles separately, then calculate the score when it comes time to display. The rides can even be over separate days – so with the given mileage over two days you’d have 26 points.
In theory, you could ride .9999 miles for all 80 days of the competition to get a total of 79 points (and never get the daily bonus).
