ParticipantI’d still like to know why they’ve redone all the corners in that area, not sure it has gained any benefit outside of cosmetics.

ParticipantI work in one of the buildings in that block, you can also turn north on Wakefield and go around the building to catch the trail on the back side.

ParticipantI had the Nashbar as well…until an unfortunate meeting between the hard plastic shielding on the inside of the bags and my spokes.

ParticipantFor better or worse I’m a Suit/Tie guy most of the week, after a couple trial pieces I settled on the Hyalite Equipment Swingline Office Pannier (Black) http://www.amazon.com/Hyalite-Equipment-Swingline-Office-Pannier/dp/B007FTMLGA which I love…a couple of forums out there talk about folding you clothes, has survived many a rain storm and some snow.

I find that I get buzzed by far fewer cars crossing on LRT than riding on Americana Drive. And the people who don’t buzz me on Americana pass on the other side of the road when they can’t see what’s coming up the other side of the hill. And then there’s the dooring issue from all the parked cars and trucks.
Shawn all fair comments, get buzzed quite a bit, I just am always wary of LRT as most cars treat it as a super highway

ParticipantUnsure of all the details, lots of points to think about on this one… I for one am not innocent of cheating a light.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I tried the Army Navy Drive route from 4MRT and it was fantastic. http://goo.gl/maps/CcF6G

Not sure how much time it might add but there is the pedestrian bridge just north of Braddock. Enter the Wakefield park entrance, take the service road past the Audrey Moore rec center and its just up the gravel road about 1/4 mile, that’s where I cross 495.

ParticipantI know this was answered but I take the service road up to N. Cherry…. good luck.
Here’s a record of yesterday’s commute anyway…

I ride from North Springfield to Arlington via Hummer/Annandale Rd to WO&D to Custis/end at Glebe (12.1 mi)… after taking that you could continue on the WO&D to Army Navy Drive or Custis to Lady Bird Johnson park….just a thought.

I am starting at wakefield park, ending at the Pentagon (North side via Boundary Channel)
The plan was Braddock -> 236 -> N. Beauregard -> 4MRT -> Jeff Davis -> Crystal Drive -> long Branch -> Pentagon. Long Bridge was bad, and the Rte. 1 to Crystal drive was probably worth bypassing as well. I could take Eads from the trail and go all the way to the south side of the pentagon, or I could go a mile extra and take the MVT.
Any advice on cutting through crystal city would be appreciated, or really any advice on getting from annandale to the pentagon.

ParticipantTwo things from yesterday today…
1. Yesterday, Custis trail..anyone else see the maintenance truck stuck in the ditch along the trail? Guy was trying to break it out with the lawnmower, sucked for him but gave me a chuckle
2. Today, wet.. why do I ever bother with rain gear during the Virginia summer?
Be safe.

Anyone recommend a good Surly shop? I made a deal with the replicant: forgo the drivers license (and associated drivers insurance expense) and I would buy him a bike. He may actually take me up on this. He is riding an old Motobecane road bike. Got these cute old fash gear levers on the head tube. Even he has gotten to the point he cant stand it – and it is too small for him. He wants a road bike with drops (none of this flat bar hybrid crap that dad has). Recommendations?
Not sure where you are located but the Bike Lane also carries Surly. I bought my Disc Trucker there a few months ago and love the bike.
EDIT: I test rode both the Trucker and the CC before deciding on what I wanted (as well as the fit), the shop in Springfield had no issues letting me zip around the lot…did the same at Spokes in Fairfax)
