I don’t know the answer to your team questions, but I saw in my very brief look at the FAQs that you need to join first as an individual and then you can join a team. I think there is also a way to contact the NBC folks with questions that aren’t addressed in the FAQs.
Although you clicked FAQ on the 2013 NBC webpage, the link is to the FAQ from the 2012 contest…

How do you remove yourself from the contest? I accidentally joined as an individual, but I want to participate on my previous team. Or is it possible to join as both an individual and as part of a team?
2nd question: Can we add teams from last year to the contest? Or do we need to create a new team for 2013?
Yes, you can join or leave a team at anytime unless the team is “full” or “invite only” but it doesn’t appear that either of these conditions can occur this year. All teams seem to be open and unlimited in size.
The old teams are gone. You need to start a new one.

Ok, the idea to balance the team with equal number of men and women didn’t receive much interest, and the idea to create a women’s team did, so the All Stars team will be mostly men I guess. Please join!

You broke your femur this winter? I guess you wrote about it here but somehow I missed it. I don’t know exactly which BA forum user name matches each of the Stava names. Are you Vincent N.? I don’t see a gap in his riding. Do you just keep rolling when you’ve busted a femur? My doc didn’t let me ride for six weeks when I broke my wrist…

Unless I’m very much mistaken, I believe one of your BAFS top nine is a woman.

Yes of course and Lena is certainly welcome to join the All Stars. Aplologies for referring to the team as a “men’s” team.
Thanks Shawn Dread for joining the team.

ParticipantCheck it out! Bike Arlington All Stars is in fifth place already! http://www.endomondo.com/campaign/nbc2013/leaderboard Two places behind my old team. Please join if you are a high roller.

ParticipantGreat job, Jeff and Laurie and Ben, for your help with this effort. I got bogged down with work, so couldn’t meet up as planned. I sure hope the SHROW rider’s effort impressed a legislator or two and caused them to think about this issue. If nothing else, a great tribute to the victims. Thanks to the riders who rode in memory of those no longer with us.

ParticipantWTF? If the teams don’t have equal number of riders, WTF? I don’t get it. I was conflicted about leaving my old team but it seems I’m no longer on it anyway, so WTF?
OK, I started a new team. It’s called Bike Arlington All Stars. I’d like to limit it to ten riders, until I figure out the advantages/disadvantages of small vs. large teams. If you are among the top nine in BAFS or your name is Pete Beers, you are welcome to join.
I thinks it’s a great idea to create a BA woman’s team.
Maybe we could have three ten member teams, The Men’s A team, Woman’s A team, Team Slacker (the B team, which could be a very strong team, given the riders here), and a bigger open team for everyone else (which could be a very strong team also).

ParticipantMy two cents. To make it fair, how about a team consisting of the top five men and top five women from the BAFS challenge? To make it fair for the other teams in the challenge because I think the top ten riders from BAFS would win easily. I was on a team that finished fifth last year and we had several on the team who didn’t ride very much.

This is just a hunch, but I think lots of people are hesitant to get started cycling on their own. I think shops and clubs should try to set up more beginner rides (flat, 10-12 miles max) for people just starting. I think these slower rides are actually pretty fun to lead on spring/summer weekends, since I’m worn out from commuting all week anyway, and don’t need anything hard. Can be extremely rewarding to see the smiles on somebody who really wasn’t sure they could do it!
I thought of you when I was reading this thread. You have played a role in my development as a cyclist beyond just a guy who uses a bike at work. I’m sure there are many others whose cycling world you have expanded. Thanks.

ParticipantIn my opinion, if you really need to call a pass, you shouldn’t be passing. Pass when it’s safe. Don’t be in such a hurry. Passing two riders on the left when they are both signaling to turn left is stupid whether you announce yourself or not.
The way this track is designed to work; cars turning left must stay out of the green zones, but bikes are not required to stay to the right of the bike lane. To discourage other cyclists from passing on the left when you are preparing to turn left, hug the curb.
