Just out of curiosity, what are merits of having studded tyres for pavement riding in DC ?

I dunno, the distinction of freezing one’s ass off should be it’s own reward ( from a guy who only commutes three miles :p ).

I like that the bike parking at the Silver Spring Whole Foods is often full with a bike per staple and occasionally maxed out with two per staple. Yeah, there are only six staples to begin with but hey it’s a change from being the only bike for years on end. 😮

Ah, that must be why the Takoma Metro has no dock. 😡

These would be a suitable retrofit for the L St cycle track.

Installation began this week as previously announced.

If the new design works well, could we see a retrofit of the 15th St. and L St. cycletracks too?

I saw this linked on the Critical Mass Facebook page and started to compose a vicious rant about all the things wrong with that sort of attitude. A few sentences in I deleted it realizing how pointless that was. These folks represent the thinking of what, 40% of the US population? Culture war anyone ?

I’m a massive fan boi(s?) for Michelin City tires http://www.michelinbicycletire.com/michelinbicycle/index.cfm?event=city.view . I’m a commuter / utility rider with only occasional recreational riding ( as in not nearly enough 😡 ) so of course YMMV.

Not surprising. Given how miserable the bike station locating app is for Citi Bike as compared to those for CaBi I can’t imagine all that many people are riding . < grumble, grumble, grumble >

Your description of the collision ( hard to call it an accident when the driver was apparently so inattentive ) almost makes the whole discussion of lighting and visibility moot. After ten plus years of urban commuting though I’ve become a really big fan of disruptive bike lighting on city streets. At dusk and into the darkness there is simply too much light point pollution for a car driver to pick out a cyclist against the headlights and neon thru the windshield. A strobing handlebar light combined with a fixed helmet light combined with a multi flashing tail light combined with a down facing strobing flashlight ( whew ) to illuminate my bike frame and my reflective tire walls has kept me alive ( and looking more than faintly ridiculous ) for a long time and I highly recommend it. I don’t have the luxury of riding trails much so my over the top lighting scheme is probably not appropriate there but then there is usually less on a trail to run a cyclist over too.

Please let us know how you fare – and if your bike survived 😮

Yes, I was using a more standard bike light at the time of the accident. I have a Sigma Illux light on the front. It is fairly bright but I am looking to upgrade to something better that also has a mode that won’t blind other riders on the trails.

This is the one I currently have and was using that morning:

Very sorry to learn of your accident and even more so the circumstances that led to it. That sort of thing just means that, as you say, cyclists are at risk regardless of our behavior, precautions and preparation. Still your resolve to be back on your bike ( or it’s replacement, nice fenders btw ) is most appreciated.

I had to elite your post for having your bike so prominently placed in your hospital bed pic. 😮 My Coda salutes your Coda.

There is always the drag show brunch at Perrys in AdMo. Probably a stretch to be done in four hours though, the lines can get long. Much fun to be sure.
