Huh? Am I reading the wrong threads?

Couple of observations based on my night riding and driving experiences – all on road, almost never on trail FFIW. I find that if I have any lights focused far enough ahead that they are blinding oncoming riders / runners then the light is not really illuminating the road well enough to be of much use in avoiding trouble. Bike lights that I have tried really only throw about 30 ft with any real power and after that its a marker light rather than a head light. I don’t care to spend money on marker lights because I have found that other bikes and runners will see just about any headlight against a dark background without difficulty. What I am most concerned about in the presence of cars however is how well the drivers see me and cars carry lights that are far more powerful than anything I could hope to carry on a bike so I prefer to add reflective stuff like tire strips and reflective vests to take best advantage of that disparity.

snip … My only suggestion is to be careful about how you aim the thing — I have gotten occasional complaints from joggers and other cyclists that I was blinding them. I try not to do that and I have resorted to temporarily moving the aim of the light when there is oncoming traffic and restoring it when they have passed. For this reason (and others) I have avoided helmet lights.

There was a bright chrome yellow one on Seventh St at Madison drive at the edge of the Smithsonian Folkfest on Saturday morning. Where any of those you saw that color?

It’s unfortunate that some of those things, like exotic saddles and unusual bars like trek bars are at once both most needful of being tried on for size to be properly evaluated and virtually impossible to get access to on a trial basis. Funny how that works.

BMC please be sure that ‘everything documented’ includes a runnining log of notes of phone conversations with names, dates and times. Contact with a insurance company is inherently adversarial regardless of the tv advertising.

It was fun to put faces with at least a few names at Bike fest. Maybe next year it won’t be competing with Pride day and so much else that we can add some more faces – and perhaps better veggie hot dogs. Great bluegrass band though.

I’ll be there early as I’m sort of volunteering. Other than once stuffing envelopes at the WABA office and turning up for BTWD a couple of times I haven’t taken much part in the goings on in the bike activity / advocacy universe in DC so I’m really looking forward to it.

Thanks very Barb much for your detailed description of what sounds more like a voyage of exploration than a day ride. It’s funny in that I attended the opening of the bike path over the bridge ( yes, it had it’s own opening ceremony ) and biked across after the ribbon was cut but wondered at the time when this was going to transition from a bridge to no where to something useful. I’m going to have to follow in your wheel tracks now to see the route for myself.

Heat? What does the temperature have to do with it? :):)

Since I live in an un-airconditioned house I actually look forward to riding even in the heat. It’s my chance to get a breeze going.

Gee, I’d think it was worth the ten minutes it would take to write a redirect into the old site, but thats just me. The new site doesn’t strike me as a good start on monetizing the bikely route sharing concept at all assuming that was part of the new owners plan.
