Participant/me snorts indignantly

Nice photos! I didn’t even know about it. However, I believe the fashion aphorism applies: if you are old enough to have embraced a style or trend the first time around, you should avoid it the next time. And I actually did own an internal hub three speed bike back in the day (and still do, though it is on multi-decade loan to my mother).

ParticipantOK, that post fairly demanded a picture with spatula in hand and the kids lined up with plates in hand.

ParticipantNow this could be a transformative moment for the right bike shop. Perhaps the bike riding world is ready for the ZIP car of bikes – the rental cargo bike? Might be worth a call to your LBS. Just a thought.
Riley Casey
ParticipantHmmmm … Might have to link this to the last power assist bike thread.

ParticipantPiling on because this situation really demands it. This was wrong on a personal affront level but as Liz said its wrong on the body politic level too. Citizens don’t just knock each other down for trivialities. If that becomes the norm we have all given up too much. Take some stand even if it’s no more than demanding an apology with the implication of further action if none is forthcoming.

ParticipantExpand that mantra to its logical conclusion. More light is better! I ride ( in the city and near in burbs ) with a helmet light, a handlebar light and a handle bar white strobe plus a red rear multi flasher. I’m thinking my spoke reflectors and reflective tire sides aren’t cutting it for this winters’ evening commutes and that LED strips may well be the way to go. I suggest that unless your ride starts AND ends on a trail and you never ride on a public street in the dark EVER that you simply remember the odds are not in your favor in a car / bike crash and being seen could be worth far more than the money and added weight when the occasion arises.
The argument that riding on a dark trail somehow entitles a rider to make someone else’s ride less safe? Grow the hell up. There may well be ways to make lights more effective since they do need to be illuminating the ground ahead on a trail more than alerting oncoming motor vehicle traffic to the presence of a bike but it just isn’t a thing to whine about. Whine about stuff that has genuine entertainment value.

ParticipantOuch, thats just playing into my worst ‘what if’ minds-eye disaster movie when roaring down the big hill on 13th St in DC at 25 mph after a pause for the view at the top. Sure would be curious to know how that nightmare came to pass.

ParticipantI must be confused. Is this thread about bikes with electric motors that assist the pedal force when needed or are we talking about electric motorcycles? For electric assist bicycles I would think the weight matters all the time every time – electric motorcycles perhaps not so much but then I’ve not seen such a device.

The weight of the bike only matters when you run out of gas. And yes, if you run out of gas (if your battery goes dead), you will be peddling a tank and it wont be easy.

ParticipantIt doesn’t look / sound like you missed anything. A mic on the camera at the back of the room doesn’t provide usable audio for a web cast. Nice idea, just needed better production.

How did you find out about the broadcast? I would have liked to have listened to parts of the morning sessions. I didn’t see anything on the WABA site mentioning that we could access the Summit by Internet, and even ask questions if we wanted to.

ParticipantFetish comes to mind. 😮

ParticipantWhere is the triple Like button when you need one? Cargo, even lowly groceries separate the spandex, carbon fiber lawyer crowd from the ‘real’ cyclists.
Class warfare comes to the Waba forums.

ParticipantI’m guessing you haven’t gotten this far without at least laying hands on an electric assist bike but if not at least go find one to heft. The added weight is pretty daunting.
Riley Casey
ParticipantAnd while I don’t imagine that too many readers of the forum are not WABA members keep in mind that WABA card holders are eligible for five or ten percent discounts on lots of stuff at most local bike shops. I’ve put that to the test at four different LBSs in DC & MD and its always been cheerfully accepted.

ParticipantOK, now I’m surprised that this thread is now three pages long. On the other hand Toslink cables to the brakes sound appealing. Digital data about brake wear, motional feedback from the derailleurs to a heads up display in the helmet? It staggers the mind.

ParticipantVery glad to see this ride idea from Proteus. The close in suburbs are ideal for utilitarian biking just as much as the urban core is. This is what biking is really all about in much the same way that cars are much more about taking a half dozen kids to soccer practice than they are about the Indy 500.
